Does a thumb drive work in USB for MP3 music?

9177 Views 10 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  dcpc08161992
I give my thumb drive to my niece and haven't gotten around to buy another one so I can't test it at the moment. Does anyone know if it (JBL Audio with NAV version) can play MP3 music from the thumb drive via the USB plug (Venza 2010 has a USB)?

Thanks,
Paul

Yes it does. This method also works with aftermarket head units with USB outlet

If a thumb drive is the same as a flash drive --- I bought a flash drive yesterday. It plays fine, but I found two problems. I put all the music on one file, but the radio separates the music into multiple files/folders and at this time I'm not sure how to toggle between the folders. The other problem (or issue) is that with the flash drive in place, the sliding top of the center arm rest will not close completely.

They make 90 degree USB elbow connectors. Maybe that would help?
You can buy 1' long usb extentions. I have this and no problems with sliding.

Depending on your radio (mine is setup B I think - power/vol dial is on left upper corner) -- there is a type/FLDS button with up and down - this changes folders.

I usually format my USB Flash/Thumb/whatever drives as NTFS so I can store large ISO files on them which exceed FAT(32) filesize limit.
Can the Vanza's audio system handle NTFS ?
My gut feeling is NO.
Prove me wrong please.
My Venza doesn't have USB capability but my next ones will.

For what its worth I used a thumb drive for a while in my 2010 (non NAV) and found that although it worked fine sound quality wise it was horribly slow. I.e., if you have a lot of music on the drive navigating is really slow etc.

I ended up getting a 160G iPod classic instead, this way I can easily sync all my music, playlists etc. also, browsing through artists, albums etc. is much faster via the iPod.

Thank you. I'll give it a try. We have three ipods and I'll probably just use one of those until my next trip to a walmart/electronics store. The speed may be an issue, but I didn't notice it as we only listened to the music on the drive to and from church. I have about 5k songs on it and it was more of the issue of how many folders than anything else.

You can buy them on ebay for $0.97 :) Just remember to search for male-to-female usb extension cable...worked like a charm for me :D
Thank you.

Thank you for the link... we all are going to need one of those if we are going to use a thumb drive for MP3:D. I was like what are these guys talking about not being able to close the sliding lid... the plug looks pretty deep in for me - then I plug in my thumb drive and bummer the lid did not close all the way because of the cup holder!

Another short sight engineering from Toyota! I bet the engineer did not plug in the thumb drive at the design stage!

Oh well, at the USB cable is cheap:clap:
