Hey guys, what do you guys think:

Drilling a hole in the stock muffler of an 8th generation Corolla.

I am thinking for the sake of less restriction.
I know, I know,:
  • One could drop the hundred dollars or so and buy a less restrictive muffler
  • It's ghetto as hell
  • Stupid
  • Other

Just humor me.
½ inch hole? 1 inch, 2 inch? Legality? Effectiveness? Noise? Front side? Back side? Side side?
What do you think?
Thanks!

Sorry, no room to humor you here. It's a stupid idea. I don't know how it would affect performance but I do know you'll just make a good muffler sound, well, like it's got a hole in it and it should be replaced . . . It'll sound Pvvvvfft Pvvvfft really crappy and you'll end up replacing it in a few weeks or trying to plug the hole, only to have it rust out.

Performance mufflers are a different scene, tuned to sound more aesthetic than a hole, and built to improve flow efficiency. I don't know much about this but I do wonder if minor performance upgrades such as CAI or exhaust really matter in daily driving, or do they only help when it's pedal to the metal?

Thanks for your answers. I was pretty sure it was a bad idea, but I thought it wouldn't hurt to get the opinion of a few others. keving85, i totally agree with you. I'll hopefully post other crazy ideas i come up with for us all to laugh at.
PS I won't be trying it.

drilling a hole int he muffler will do NOTHING for you except make you have to drop the money later since like they said once the moisture gets in there it will ROT! doesn't take long at all for that to happen on it's own without someone drilling a hole.

All you will notice is more noise

To add to the many downsides of drilling a hole in your muffler is that you will lose significant back-pressure in the exhaust, so your car's acceleration will suffer a lot. You are better off buying a sport exhaust system.
