I have Dynamic Radar Cruise Control on my Corolla 2018 and I observe one behavior that seems somewhat odd to me.
If cruise control speed is set higher than the car in front of me and I am approaching the car, once the distance, selected in the control is reached, it will be maintaining it.
However, if I just changed the lane and happened to be at a distance shorter than the one set in the control, it will not try to slow down to keep the set distance, not matter how close you are. It will maintain whatever distance is, but not try to change it to safer/set one.

Not sure about the specifics of 2018 Corolla’s system but I'd assume it’s the same as when a vehicle cut you off entering the preserved space between the car and the car ahead: it enters the “radar beam” at an angle that doesn’t allow immediate recognition. After that, if the two cars then have the same speed, there might be no significant return signal difference to trigger anything. Plus if you did brake (being cut off) or accelerate (passing), some systems then deactivate radar function. Those are rather basic systems and no Autopilot. Even Autopilot isn’t totally what the name imply.

You have to take into account, the pre collision system. The ecu will need time to recalculate the distance of the object in front of it when it’s abrupt.

One shouldn’t be completely reliant on these systems. Just like the self driving systems, you as the operator will need to take over. These systems were designed by humans. Therefore, calculations can be off and not function as intended.
