This is a weird issue I'm having with my AC. It has been happening probably 4 or 5 times a week. I'll be driving around and after I turn my car off to go in a store and then start it back up again.. the AC just won't work. The controls say the AC is on, I can turn it up and down or off and on, but no air blows. The same thing happens sometimes too if I hit the AC off button. When I turn it back on it, the controls say it's on but nothing happens. I turn my car off and on, nothing. The weirdest part, the way I fix it is to hit the right speed bump or big dip in the road and the AC kicks back on... Some kind of electrical issue?

Any advice is much appreciated! If my signature isn't up, I'm driving a 1999 Toyota Solara SLE V6.

Probably the first place I'd check is under the passenger's side dash. There should be a connector to the blower resistor which can come loose. Make sure it's tightly seated. If that's not it, try turning the fan to it's highest setting. If it works there you may have an issue with the blower resistor itself. From there I would suspect a loose or defective relay but I couldn't tell you where to look. I find it strange it runs fine until you stop and then doesn't work. Doesn't really sound like something's loose but hitting a bump to 'fix' it indicates a loose connection, relay, switch contact, broken solder joint, etc. Old vehicles had wire wound resistors for the blower motor and if this is only occurring on one speed setting that would be my best guess. However, a '99 may have an electronic 'resistor pack' and that could have a bad solder joint. Just some ideas from an old 'shadetree' guy. Hope someone can give you more specific advice.

It's most likely yer blower motor power connector. They seem to git hot which adds resistance to the connection which makes it hotter. Eventually the contact point is too high in resistance to work properly. :(

You could cut off the connector and replace the contacts. I would go with high temp connectors. I used the standard aluminum type crimp connectors on my blower, used 10 gauge wire to make jumpers, and it seems to be fine after a year...so far.

Alright guys and gals. Here is whats going on with these Solaras with the AC issues related to blower speeds.

1.) The blower will only work on high and not work on the low settings.

Solution- This is caused by a faulty blower motor ($30) resistor that controls the low end of the blower. This part is on the passenger side under the dash on a 1999 Solara SLE.

2.) The blower will work on low only and then intermittently jump up to working correctly as you hit bumps etc. This also happens to be frequent where the cut in and cut out happen during hotter weather.

Solution- This is caused by the trace lines on your original Blower Motor Control Module ($130+). On a 1999 Solara SLE this is located right next to the gas pedal. The trace lines on this module are so thin that after being in your car for 10+ years the unit tends to wear our the thin lines and cause intermittent connections on the controller. To fix this, I suggest getting a replacement control module that has the newer design with the thicker trace lines. There is a difference between factory and aftermarket as well with the heat sink so that should make it easier to recognize as well.

I have the exact same problem with my 2013 Camry!!! The my fans work just the AC will only work get cold until I hit railroad track crossing, speed bump or take a turn sharp and fast like the duke’s hazard. Did you ever find out what the problem was? The AC blows nice and cold once it starts working.

Probably a connector issue somewhere. If you can get an electrical diagram to locate all pertinent connectors. Then just wiggle as A/C is working to what shuts it off.

The blower fan, high/low AC switch, cooling fan relay connectors, dash A/C switch, etc. etc. May also be a dirty/corroded connector. Remove and cycle the connectors to see if that corrects.

No fast solution, just needs trial and error.
