you can use anything...i was using some bbq grill degreaser on a towel the other day and it works just as well...but i was only cleaning some of the metal in the engine compartment...not the actual engine...
i use this stuff my dad steals from work ... but when i cant find any i use good ole 409 .... then i coat the engine with some armor all ... gets her shinny as hell just spary the armor all and leave it ... makes her all shiny and a dirt magnet
i use simple green automotive degreaser...stuff is amazing.. i had trouble finding it but ended up getting it at pepboys

doug
i washed it down with simple green, but now it wont turn over, what should i do
you should wait for the engine to dry before turning it over... you did cover your battery and fuse box right?
no, i read in another thread that you dont have to cover anything
^ ARGH MAN you just reminded me of some guy at the pressure-wash place while me and rich (brungold) were washing our engine bays....this guy had a v6 gen3 camry and he just sprayed the fuk outta everything in his engine bay, didnt cover up anything at all.... so then we proceed to wash our engine bays...and then i look over to where he was at, and he was gone....so i guess he had no problems turning on his car...lol
guy was nutz but still....i would cover up the battery and alternator at least...

p.s. yea use simple green, it works great.. :D
i never directly sprayed the battery, and the fuse box was bone dry when i was done, now the whole thing is dry, but it still isnt turning over, do you think this will be major money?

oh yeah, i changed the air filter after i washed, it looks like a mouse was living in there (i literally think there was) and every once in a while when i try to start it, smoke comes out of the hole for the intake

idk man, I personally would be afraid of water getting into and shorting out the alternator and the distributor at least (esp on the 3 and 5SFE's where the coil is inside the cap, over time they have enough issues with condensation).

I at least cover those... sure they still look a little dirty but at least the car still turns over.

peace

Steve
I got a huge question. What takes out those salt stains or salt corrosion on the aluminum and metal parts under the hood?
gunk

thats nothing... i saw a guy once sticking the hose up his tail pipe... like all the way! and he went at it for like a minute straight. i saw him doing it while sitting at a stoplight, so i dont know what happened to him. smart.

andy where do you guys go for pressure wash? i need a place to clean the underbody of my car... its pretty bad from when my transaxle was leaking. theres a car wash place near my house but theres big signs that say "NO ENGINE CLEANING". so yea i cant go there.
ANSWER GUYS! I AM HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM! I WASHED MY ENGINE BAY AND SMOKE POORS OUT OF THE INTAKE!
DO NOT USE GUNK CITRUS BRITE ENGINE DEGREASER.

it sucks...its more expensive than the foaming stuff, and it doesnt do crap, theres no foaming action and what it does remove just ends up floating and settling on something else.

get Gunk foaming engine brite or somethin like that, i think its like $3.00 for a big ass can which is more than enough to do an engine
i ended up taking it to a shop, he took off the distibutor cap and dried up everything inside, that was the problem
^wd40 would have work the same
ypu spray it in the cap and then start the car it runs rough for i little bit but smooths out
i couldve tried that if the car was turning over at all
how would one go about covering up the battery fuse box and alternator? like what would you guys suggest using?
