Engine Drain Cock Clogged Toyota Pickup

I started getting this wierd over heating problem, but only when Im coming home from snowboarding. The temp guage just goes all the way into the red and the only way it goes down is if I go full throttle. It dosent matter how fast Im going or if the heater is on and the radiator dosent get very hot or have the pressure it suppose to. So I figured it was a sticky thermostat and as I was draining the coolant I found that it will not come out of the engine drain cock. I stuck a metal poker in there and it seems to have alot of black sludge but i cant drain the motor. Does anyone have any suggestion on how to free up my coolant passages in the engine? It is an 89 toyota pickup automatic.

Try removing the thermostat and reconnecting its housing. Then use a hose to flush the block from the coolant intake side on the head. You can also remove a few heater hoses, etc and use the hose to flush them out plus the heater core.

There are coolant flush additives you can use but one issue is any material broken loose from the engine may end up plugging the radiator.
black sludge as in oil? does your oil have any water in it? when i flush my engine i use a kit from prestone i got from walmart that attaches to the heater hose and goes thorugh the entire system and you just cap it when your finished. Have you been losing coolant and freqently had to refill?
A weak water pump can have these symptoms DO NOT push your luck overheating the engine thats a one way ticket to coastly repair flushing as described is a good start. Try burping the system let it get to temp shut off allow engine to cool some slowly and carefully turn radiator cap look for antifreeze or a burp of air. Also squeeze the radiator hose during operation you should feel resistance trying to force the hose back out if you have positive flow Good luck
alrighty, i tried leaving both drain cocks open with the thermost out and putting the garden hose in the radiator then turning on the car with the heater on but while i was doing that water still wasnt coming out of the engine drain cock and the temp guage went past the red. I dont have water in my oil or vise versa and i was thinking of using a flush kit but i think this problem is beyond what a flush kit can do. So i dont really want to go buy all this crap like a water pump, flush kit, thermost, if there is a reasonable solution, but i guess im gonna have to if this all i got. an the sluge is not oil and i do not have a coolant leak, it really never overheats unless im coming home from borading 3 time out of the week
Keep poking at the block drain hole until it opens up and then flush it.
If you keep overheating it then youll warp the head and thats no fun. I just asked if the sludge was oil cause if your timing chain wore a hole in the cover and it was leaking through. I would guess its the water pump if it hasnt been replaced in a while and you might as well replace the thermostat since there cheap. When you burp it make sure the heater is all the way open (full heat). The prestone flush kit i have doesnt need the engine drain cock opend, the water comes out the radiator.
A bad water pump sounds like the more likely culprit to me. Pull and replace. But before doing that, you may want to try and flush it with a cleaning additive. You're getting some circulation (albeit small) since the truck will cool under higher RPMs. If that doesn't take care of the buildup, spray a heavy duty cleaner up into the engine drain cock and see if that won't break it up. Just be sure you completely drain, flush and refresh your coolant afterwards. Also make sure any cleaner you use won't cause any damage to the block, radiator and other parts.

If that don't get it, replace the water pump. I still think that's where you'll find your problem.
And there we have the number one reason why not to use *stop leak*

Get some compressed air and blow thru passages/hoses with the rad cap off and hoses disconnected.

You'll get some serious goo out of it.

Your radiator is probably fubar (clogged).

All too true. My recommendations above are assuming no stop leak has been used. If it has, then I'd recommend you replace most of the cooling components (radiator, water pump, heater core) and flush the system thoroughly.
