Hello, I have a 2000 corolla ve and the manual shows 5w30 engine oil should be used. But yesterday I went to walmart for engine oil change and was told my car is buring engine oil, and the milage is high (about 100K miles), so the people there suggested me to use 10w30 oil instead.
I am not sure if that is reasonable, can anybody here give me any suggestions?

you can use 10W-30, its not gonna hurt any. Or you could keep using 5w-30 and every now and then check the oil level and add oil when needed. Would also use a max-life or high mileage oil (castrol or valvaline)

10w30 and 5w30 are not that much differant..... the only diff is that 5w30 will let the car have an easyer time moving the oil in cold starts in colder weather... good for winter but both are the same thinkness in the end.

Did they say how much oil was burned. I would check your oil at least once a week. And keep extra oil in the car. I have a slight oil burning problem on my 98 corolla. I switched to 10w30 and use full synthetic oil. That seemd to slow the oil consumption down Right now i am using a product called auto-rx. This stuff is a gentle cleaner that works over a extened period of time to clean the internals of your engine. Check out the website www.auto-rx.com for more info and its use and effectiveness. Just a thought to help out your engine before it develops into a bigger problems like burnt pistons or leaking valves. It is possible that your piston rings are stuck coked with carbon build up or sludge. There are alot of post regarding the "oil consumption issue" with our corolla's.
