hey i have a 84 toyota truck with a carb 22r. i jus bought it for practically free and it has some problems. first, when i start it up it wont stay at idle it just shuts off until it warms up so u just have to hold down the gas for about a minute. second, when ur driving it its making a very rapid metalic noise and it gets more rapid the faster you go. i think it might need new motor mounts because when i look at the engine and exaust when its running i can see it shaking so i know thats part of the noise. does anyone know what my problem could be???

Thanks again for any help

cold start 'shut down' would be the choke plate in the carb (stuck open and not closeing cold)

the noise sounds like main bearings--- hows the oil pressure ????

It might not be the choke at all, if it doesn't want to idle when you first start it cold, it might be the AAP diaphram. It's for cold starts for extra fuel for a faster idle and stop when truck is warmed up...

Check on the side of the carb next to valve cover, there's a vacuum line that goes to a AAP valve, which is a diaphram that is vacuum operated on the side of the carb.

Take off air cleaner and you'll see on vac line going to it. Pull the line and stick a BB or golf tee in line. Replace air cleaner and start truck if it's does go back to normal idle then that is the problem and get a new one. If it still doesn't idle right then that is not your problem. But it is an easy way to rule it out and doesn't cost you anything...
Must be something else. Good luck...
The aap diaphram is available from NAPA for about $12 + tax.
