and another thing...My dad had borrowed my car for about 2 months when he was down in florida on business. He claims he changed the oil, but i just got finished changing it and it was dirty as hell....GAH!....

do you think this could have anything to do with it?

Is the rattling coming from the top or bottom of the engine?

For your sake I hope its not the bottom, otherwise your looking at spun bearings.

If its from the top it could be a sticky lifter, worn valve shim, etc..

Does the rattling get louder the more you push on the gas?

it doesn't get louder, it just gets faster as the rpms increase.
and it sounds to be coming from the top.

If you have a engine stethoscope you can pinpoint where the noise is coming from. Or just take off the vavle cover and have alook.

A sticky lifter or worn shim usually makes a ticking sound. Most ppl think its valve tick, but its not.

Spun bearings make a clunking sound.

Low oil level, going to long on oil changes, or the engine reving at high rpms for long periods of time.

i'm leaning towards spun bearings, if my dad is just lying to me and didn't change the oil while he was in florida.

cost of repair of spun bearings? estimated?

not really sure though...cause its not a clunking sound...its more of the rock in can be shaken kinda sound.....i'll take off the valve cover and have a looksy and check all my wires and whatnot...

thanks guys

No idea on the cost of repairs (I'm the mechanic when it comes to my car), but it varies though depending on how bad it is.

If only a bearing is messed up, you can just replace the bearing.

If a rod or the crank is messed up, then you looking at a lot more money.

You can unbolt the oilpan and remove the rod / main caps and check out the bearings.

Crank and main caps on my 3S-FE:

Pistons and rods have been removed.

5S-FE has a balance shaft assembly which you'll need to unbolt to get to the rod / main caps.

Well if you have a timing chain that is loose than there will be a clicking sound from the engine. You will hear it for about 3 seconds on a cold start until the oil pressure goes up. If really loose you will here it on and off as u drive. Mine is loose and I can here it loud and pretty often and I have a loss of power and acceleration. The chain could be loose enough to cause the timing to be off or it could have even jumped on the sproket. Toyota timing chain problems are very popular. Sounds to me like that is your problem. Not sure if your vehicle has chain or belt.
