I have developed a clacking noise in the bottom end of my 22RE in my 88 4Runner. It had worn thru the timing cover, mixing antifreeze into the oil, then sat for a month while I ordered in parts. It ran fine for about 10 miles, then developed this suddenly. I am assuming that I got corrosion on the crankshaft journals, causing a bearing to spin once it heated up. I'll know more after I pull the engine.

A rebuilt is out of the question- way too pricey, and even pull-outs are almost $1000 at the local wrecker and you never know what you're getting there. I am bouncing around the idea of a Chevy V6 mated to my tranny (5spd standard). The wreckers are full of thes, or even Chev 350's.

Is there a cost effective adapter plate on the market?

I'm not trying ot build a mudder or a show truck, this is my daily driver and the brown cancer is starting already. I am just looking for options.

im not sure there is a adapter out there, could just as well be, but if your gonna drop in a chevy motor, i'd mate it to a chevy tranny, just to keep complications and unhidden problems from arising.

Downey has a conversion kit. Check their website.

Not cheap. Or check Advance Adapters.

Also take into consideration how will the axles hold up to a V8 engine.

Truthfully by the time you are done with the conversion you will probably have vested more time then if you had just gotten another 22 series motor. The only requirement for a conversion from carb to EFI is that the exhaust ports on the head are an off oval shape.

I just did a transfer of a 22r I pulled from my 85 and put the efi from my 88 4runner on it and everything is up and running now.

(85 had a a few holes in the roof from asphalt contact)

According to Downey, it won't.

I'm with obex26. By the time you do the swap, you could have built a kick butt 22R.

if you are looking into just swapping out the motor to get you by you can try this web site. www.car-part.com i just recently did a swap on my 88 pickup with a 22r and i was able to find the motor on there for 400. most places were wanting anywhere from 100 to 1500 for a used one. the site will prolly give you a lot of help i kwo it did for me:thumbup:

Well, the engine is out and my worst fears are real. The #3 connecting rod bearing spun. The kicker is that the rest of the engine is in primo shape, the otrher bearings are like new! I am going to post separate from this, but is it worth getting the crank spray welded and remachined to save teh rest of the engine? Or should I just move on, strip it for what is usable and scrap the rest?

Thanks for the posts all. I'll be checking them out right away.

You can probably get a remanufactured crank and a new set of bearings pretty cheap, but you'll have to pull #3 at the least, and have the rod rebuilt too. At which point, you may find yourself having trouble getting ring seal in that cylinder again. My experience has been about 50/50 with getting good seal without boring and honing to a new piston. You can have your whole bottom end rebuilt for around 700 or 800 USD and have a fresh short block.

False alarm!

Neither the crankshaft nor the connecting rod are butched! The soft bearing material had fused onto the machined steel surface, looking like deep gouges in the surface. A lot of emery cloth (and a little prayer!), and they are good as new. Thanks all for the info and tips.

Either mic the crank, or check with plastigage in several locations to make sure the crank is not knackered. Don't want to put it back together and pull it again next month cuz there's no oil pressure on that journal. A couple thousandths can ruin your day.

Don't be scared- go big
there is no substitute for cubic inches. Yeah, you could spend your money & have a peppy 22r, but how many ppl have the unmistakable growl of a V8 coming out of a toyota?? That commands respect :)
