Engine Tapping/Click Noise

1970 Views 6 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  mikes_matrix
Hi all -

A month ago I purchased an 03 XR with 23K miles. In the last day or so, I have just noticed a tapping/clicking sound coming from an area under the box where the oil filler cap is (I assume this is the air cleaner box)... is this normal for the Matrix (I have the 1ZZ engine with no modifications)? I am wondering if I just didn't hear this before because I typically have the radio and AC going... In older times I would associate the sound as being a bad lifter or valves that needed adjustment.

What do you guys think? Is this a dealer visit?

Yes, this ticking/clicking is normal. It's the infamous VSV (vacuum switching valve).
take to the dealer ......
I work a a toyota dealer ....
you might be right it may be just the Evap Vsv....
but that is a nice constant click when its on....

I have seen something very strange on a celica intake ( a GT with plastic intake )where the inside delaminates and make a noise like a bad rattle ticking noise this comes and goes with diferent load or rpm changes and it does sound like a bad lifter noise.........
