I just bought a 2012 Camry SE and noticed the Bluetooth option would not turn on so I could pair anything. I had a friend of mine who is a Toyota Master Tech do an update for me, but in the first phase of the update it says that it is unable to start the ETFS drivers. Now there is a constant message that says it is in update mode and to insert a valid USB stick. I am unable to use the backup camera, navigation, or change the source for the stereo. Nothing but the FM radio works. Any help would be much appreciated.

I take it your Toyota Master Tech can't help? If would appear the update stalled/crashed. With the usb still in, while not highly recommended I would turn the engine off and back on and see if it restarts the update. I had similar issue on another car(not Toyota) and this did the trick. Any chance file is corrupted?

My guy says he thinks the module needs to be replaced, which is why the Bluetooth wouldn't work in the first place. I just want to exhaust every effort to correct the issue on the software side before I have someone crack open my dash.

I have tried disconnecting the battery and letting it sit for a while, but when reconnected, the unit is still asking for an update stick. I have tried using a different USB, and re-downloading the files in case of corruption, all with the same result. ETFS drivers fail to start.

$300 - $400 plus labor, which is definitely outside of my budget. I bought the car on Labor Day from a reputable (for whatever that's worth) dealership. They are telling me that it isn't their responsibility but I am at the point where if I can't get them to get it fixed, then I am going to return the vehicle, which sucks, because I have fallen in love with it already. So if I can somehow verify that it is a hardware issue and not just the software being finicky, then I will feel much better about doing that.

What size USB drive are you using? What size was the other drive?

I am wondering if the drivers in the unit will only work with a certain size USB stick, and anything bigger might cause corruption.

Look on ebay and install yourself.

Along with the suggestions of smaller capacity drive, if the drive happens to be a Sandisk brand, try something other than the Sandisk. A while back Sandisk was producing USB drives that were altered to improve compatibility with newer computer OS's. The drive would act more like a hard drive in that there was no option to 'safely remove' as is found with most removable USB media. While most of these USB drives worked OK in computers, some non-Windows devices did not handle what Sandisk had done very well. Sandisk did stop producing these as there were so many complaints.

Don't think it was mentioned. Perhaps try disconnecting the cars battery for a short while and reconnecting allowing the system a fresh boot up.

I think Sandisk pushed out a utility to strip this from the drives because of the complaints. Usually, all of my flashdrives are Sandisk branded, and the first thing I do is remove their BS software and turn them into generic flash drives.

I mention the smaller drive because I have a Rigol Oscilloscope that I did a firmware update on. It says it is compatible with any USB drive, but when I went to do the update, I had to go through 2-3 different drives before I found one that would work.

I don't recall finding a utility to fix this and from what I recall it was hard programmed into the firmware. I think I've had a few of the Sandisk drives you mentioned which there was a utility to remove their crapware.
Some discussions on the issue I encountered.....

@Cantripvox

Don't return the car! Replace that crappy entune head unit with an Android head unit. It completely blows the stock head unit out of the water and installation is as easy as plug and play. Only thing I wish for in hindsight is not doing this sooner.

Non exhaustive list of features:
-Retains stock look with increased screen size 8''
-Your choice of navigation software with free updated maps
-Retain steering wheel controls, TPMS, and Fuel gauge
-Retain stock back up camera or easily add an HD camera with radar support
-MUCH improved sound from speakers due to increased watt output per speaker
-Install any android app from the google play store
-Play music off SD card or your choice of streaming platform (offline or online methods available)

It costs $400 or less on eBay. I'd recommend going for a quad core cpu unit because they boot up much faster.

Have you figured this out because my car is doing the same exact thing???

Did you ever resolve the issue with entune stuck in update mode? My dealer is saying i need a new radio and a new amplifier.......

Very frustrating

Make sure you do the following;

1. USB stick of 8gb of LESS.
2. Format your USB stick. 'MS DOS FAT'
3. Copy the v5 or v3 version on your memory stick. (it was NOT necessary for me to update to v3 first)
4. Even in update loop I just removed the faulty stick, and put in the new one.

Updated completed fine.

If You bought the car this past labor day there has to be a lemon warranty correct?
NO.
I know this thread is old but just inform folks there is no “lemon law” for used cars.
