Okay, well I managed to do the swap to the Entune Premium w/ Nav on my 2015 Camry (coming from the basic Entune). That was straightforward and easy. I was able to register the donor VIN with Entune's site to get the app and it is running on my phone. When I powered up the unit for the first time after getting the Entune App on my phone, it asked me to do a mandatory update. Did that.

Checked my maps, and they are dated 2014. Picked up a 2015 map from a user here on TN. It works as far as I can tell, but I don't know what has changed between the two.

So, from reading here on TN, there should be a newer software for my Entune than what I have. (The versions all say something like AU 38.74.)

I asked a friend of mine who is a tech for a Toyota dealer, and he asked about the update. He was told it would cost me $187. There is a procedure using a USB drive, Techview and TIS for updating the software.

This doesn't sound right. The $187 sounds like a map update, not a software update.

Any clarification? Specifics that I can give back to my friend to point him in the right (read: free) direction?

Maybe it was both.
The whole system is a ripoff. Lifetime map updates from Garmin are cheap - relatively.

What yr is the entune that you put in? 2014? How do you know you don't have the latest update?
The one installed came out of a 2015 Camry XLE. From what I can read, it is a 2015 model unit. PN: 86100-06031

I don't know if it is the latest update or not. I seem to remember there being a new release, but according to a TSB from April 2, 2015, I have the latest. Looking to see if there is an update to this TSB.

Maybe it was both.

That's not the point. If I was worried about updated maps, I can just use my phone. That's not the point. I just wanted the unit updated if it is available.

Well I can tell you the latest entune update has Slacker radio as well as destination search. If you have these, I'm assuming you have the latest version. The newer versions of entune I'm pretty sure update over the air, so they don't require a USB to update them. Although you may be able to update them with a USB if you didn't wanna use your data
