I receive an EV Mode currently unavailable message when I push the EV mode button while stopped. First noticed it 2 weeks ago, it was 108 degrees out, I thought that had something to do with it.

It was 70 degrees outside this past weekend and I still get the same message.

My battery status indicates 3/4 full charge (green)...

Any ideas?

There are many reasons EV mode won't be available. The vehicle and the hybrid powertrain must be at operating temp. If you tried when first starting out it will be unavailable. Likewise, if the car/battery is very warm and regenerative braking is reduced or eliminated then EV mode will not be available. In all cases you must be under 25 miles per hour...around 0-10 is best. It does work, keep trying.

While you will eventually get into EV mode, you will find it rather worthless. Throttle response is terrible...in fact, giving too much gas will pop you out of EV mode. When you eventually get to 25 mph, you will pop out of EV mode.

Frankly, if you drive will a light foot in normal or economy mode you can drive in all-electric mode by yourself up to 35-40 mph once everything is all warmed up. EV mode is really just a novelty. Same with economy mode...throttle response is so dampened all the joy is removed from driving...might even be dangerous under some traffic conditions. I leave all in normal and drive gently and I get the same mpg in either normal, economy, or EV mode.

I have a new 2012 HHY, and have not been able to activate EV mode either. Is that expected, is the EV mode also worthless for 2012?

Assuming the above is true, could it be that EV mode does nothing? Why would you not want to be in EV mode always? (Like I am always in ECON mode). I.E. go electric alone whenever/whereever possible.

a question for you all, since I have never been in EV mode -

If you engage EV mode, assuming the "conditions are right", does EV mode get reset or go away when the "conditions are no longer met", where upon you must again press the button to re-engage the EV mode at a later time?

Or, does EV mode remain enabled whenever "conditions are right" until you disable it with a button push.

thanks!

In my very few flirtations with the EV mode in my 2012 Prius, once you break EV limitations, you're back to Normal (not even your last selected mode!) until you press a mode button again. Like @jeffs3820 stated above, it's far better to just stay in your preferred mode full time and drive in your normal style.

My 2008 HH seems to never in EV mode. My gas milage over 6000 miles is around 22 Mpg, pretty disappointing and I can only assume your / my battery is degraded although I have tested my battery with the MyPrius app using the OBD2 dongle and it appears to be ok. I have a roof rack, cart around lots of bikes on back of vehicle and trips involve mountain passes so perhaps 22Mpg is not that bad. In the city it seems worse.

EV on Highlanders is gimmick for parking lot slow creeping around, after battery was fully charged and accelerator pedal is feathered. It's sales pitch, not a useful feature. Just drive the car, plenty to be obsessed with without it, as is.

The electric motor in my 2006 HH won't stay on for more than a few seconds, no matter how light my foot is... I am averaging about 16 mpg for 3 years.
3 different dealers say "our computers say your drivetrain is just fine". Anybody else have this problem ?

You have to push it every time.
