I was posting in the thread about what gear we carry in our trucks, and I didn't want to thread jack, but I noticed there are quite a few of you with fire extinguishers. My question is, where do you guys store them? Currently, I just leave mine behind the seats (double cab). But in the case of an emergency, that might not be the best place to store it, just because it's not easily accesible. Also, I'm getting close to finally getting some subs and an amp, and was thinking where else can I store some of the stuff back there.

I remember reading threads about how some people store their maglites on the side of the driver seat.
(Toku's ride)

My driver seat doesn't have that rotating recliner knob, so there is more room. The fire extinguisher I have isn't that big, probably a one time use extinguisher. The diamteter of the extinguisher is 3.25", and 15" long, so it's pretty similar in size to a maglite, but I'm not too sure I want to mount that there.

I found a mount at home depot, but the question is, where should I mount it?

Or should I not even bother with it? Just keep it behind the seats? I know mounting it in the bed is useless because anyone can just steal it. Anywhere toward the ceiling in the cab would get in the way. Any thoughts?

I keep mine behind the rear seat, drivers side, in my DC. I figure that the extra few seconds it takes to pop the seat back and grab it are not really going to make a difference.

Mine is in a bracket screwed through the bed. Haven't been able to shake it loose in 20K miles:

No one has stolen it so far, despite parking in various locations throughout Boston, Brookline, Manchester, etc. I always wonder if it'll be gone, but then again, the extinguisher itself is only like $15. I doubt it's worth the bother to anyone.

Plus, you don't really see it when the tailgate is up unless you are more than 6' tall.

^ The only problem is that you've now given them something to break into your truck with. I'm willing to bet more people then you know have seen it.

Honestly I'd just leave the extinguisher behind the seat. It's going to take an extra two seconds to move the seat to get to it. If two seconds is going to make the difference you aren't going to be putting out any fire with that extinguisher....

I'm curious as to why you carry them...I mean I could understand when your out on the trail or something...MAYBE...but for normal every day driving it just seems like one more compressed thing that could be hazardous in an impact.

Whatever you do, don't hang it on the front pillar - rickey racer style. If you crash your truck at a bad angle, they'll be peeling your head off of the fire extinguisher. Okay, the airbags will help.

Define normal everyday driving. :) For me, I could be on a "trail" if I decide to take a shortcut, or if I decide to roll up to the cabin after work on a whim. For me it is easier just have it along than have to have keep pulling it in and out. Reality is I am on my 6th fire extringuisher. I have used one once to put out an electrical fire on some guys car stopped along the highway, and the others I have used to put out campfires due to clueless boneheads leaving them burning unattended.

Same here. Once you've seen a vehicle burn to the ground, you don't want to take the chance of that happening to you. I just got one the other day and put it behind the rear seats.

yeah... seriously, ever since i got this truck, i've been in "just in case" mode. i want to be prepared for as much as i can. i try to equip my truck with a bunch of items that will help in those "just in case" moments. shoot, a lot of my mods are primarily for those same times.

i guess the overall consenus is to just have it behind the back seat. at least behind the driver side, because mine is on the passenger side (kinda stupid, i know, i just stuck it there when i got it). i'll just have to move it over. i just thought i could find somewhere else to have it easier accessible.

They can come in handy. I changed a carb on a 70 Cuda and used steel braided lines-all heavy duty. I didn't tape up the elect lead for the choke and it arc'd a hole through the fuel line. My engine died and a second later it ignited. Within a few seconds we were out of the car and putting out the fire. Without a fire extinguisher, it would have burned to the ground and my insurance company might have figured out why.

I also used one to put out another guys car.

yep having one is nice !
years ago a friend had replaced a fuel line with the wrong hose. so the gas softened it up and had a bit of engine miss so i pulled over and opened the hood, even used my letterman's sweater and dirt, but insurance said it was a write off ;-(

so have had one in all my cars/trucks since then and have used a few to help other folks.

I have to agree with you on that one...What are the chances you will ever really need one?...I one drive past a house fire before the fire fighters got there...if only I had my extinguiser....

I would say they are pretty good.

Let me ask, do you have a first aid kit? Is it one of those that has more than bandaids? If so, why? What are the odds you will break an arm and need a sling?

Do you have a fire extinguisher in your house? If not, why not? Never ever the possibility of a grease fire? Not to mention that most insurance companies offer a discount if you have one.

For the same reasons I carry a tow strap or jumper cables, I carry a fire extinguisher. I would simply have it and never use it, than to need it and not have one.

I like the idea of having by the seat, where the Maglite was. If the door is open you would have good access to it. If my truck is on fire I'm pretty sure that door will be open. :)
Did you check to see if it would fit? I'm sure you can find one that will fit.

Meh... if someone wants in, they can push the little sliding rear window out with one hand. Or use a rock, or use my fire extinguisher. Not having one isn't going to keep someone out of the truck.

If somebody breaks my shit, I'll file an insurance claim. And seriously for a minute, if they ever do jack my sliding rear window, I'm replacing it with solid glass. That thing is a toy... might as well leave the doors unlocked.

As for why to carry the extinguisher, I do a lot of wheeling and it's required gear in most clubs.

i haven't actually checked because i've been bed ridden (knee surgery). maybe that's the same reason why i've been on TN more than usual . but i was thinking, if anything, i would put it against the door in that same area. that's so the extinguisher isn't in the way when getting in and out of the truck. well, that's assuming that the extinguisher will even fit.

If your truck caught on fire and all you could do is watch it burn to the ground you would think that extinguisher was worth a million bucks. I forsee having to use it for someone else more than myself but you never know, and for $12 its cheap insurrance.

Mine's rolling around behind my seat until I find somewhere to mount it.
