FM Song display

Does anyone know why Toyota doesn't use a FM radio receiver that will process RBDS (Radio Broadcast Data System) transmissions that will display the station name, song title and artist? It cant be a cost issue as the chip that goes in the receiver is less than a dollar. The standard (in the US) has been around since 1998.

It seems that the display could accomodate it as it shows station/song info for XM and iPods. On a similar note, what brand radio receiver is used in the 09's? Dealer didn't have a clue.

Even my GM fleet company car has it :headbang:

my 03 XLE has it, but i don't think my 07 SE does, weird... maybe only they only put it in XLE's?
That's a good question. Past cars, including the last gen Matrix has this function... I wonder if there's a upgraded chip available to allow this display.
I couldnt believe this either. Really annoyed me when I found out it wasnt there.

So u r telling me if I compare receiver with and without RBDS, there should only be $1 different? I think Toyota try to cut cost.. even $1.

U know what they say.. a penny save is 1.3648 quadrillion earn. :D

Not sure if this is what you're talking about, but my stock JBL Nav displays that info. You just have to have the override enabled to view it while driving, however. I have an 07 V6 SE.

How do U do that? don't have the manual with me right now. :D

My stock Navi/JBL unit also displays the info as long as the station is sending the info out.

i have an 09 hybrid with navi.

Well, without a "hacked" navigation DVD (or I believe a version 5.1 disc?), you cannot do an override, so the only way to view the radio station info (if it's being broadcasted) is if your car is at a stand-still, like at a red light.

But, if you have the stock navi system, under the Audio button (when you're in FM mode), you can view your presets, and in the preset buttons themselves, it should scroll the info. Also, I think if you hit the "Messages" button in that same Audio area, it will bring up a more detailed display.

Can't tell ya how it would work on the non-navi models though.
The 2010 non nav JBL now has RDS.
Does anyone know the manufacturer/model of the radio for the JBL no Nav system in an 09 XLE? Wondering if the radio was truely made without RDS.

Looks like it was just one of those "upgrades" they originally design into a new model -- then take them away. Knowing that in a few years they will introduce them as new features to keep the model rolling off the shelves after the newness wears off.

Its not like someone at Toyota suddenly thought... "whoops we left RDS off the new cammies, silly me."

They knew it was just one of the features (like auto up windows) that people would want maybe even enough to consider trading in their couple year old car for.
ur gonna spend all that money just to have the HU tell u the name of the song on the radio?
i have no use for it since i use my mp3 player
I like the look of the OEM stuff and hate the look of an aftermarket navigation.

Myself and many others do not mind the thread or question.

I would like to know too, even if it may have been talked about in the past.

Non nav JBLs did not have RDS for 2007 -2009, this has changed for 2010.

Then it should be an easy SEARCH.............
