This is my first post (have been reading TN for a long time). I have an 06 TRD sport LB. My truck has 30k miles.

Here's the deal. Sucks that I dont have the proper equipment otherwise I would mod my truck myself. Last week I had the 5100s installed (1.75). Then today, I got some bfg ats. During the install of the tires, the mechanic shows me that my front right cv boot has spilled its guts and is basically dry. He says that I will need to replace the 'right front cv axel', not just the boot. He said the reason for this was that dirt and particles could ruin the axel and not just the boot. Apparently, the axel is only available through the dealer which means it will cost me an arm and a leg.

I suspect that the shop who did the 5100 install f'd it up but not sure. Will this be covered under my factory warranty. I am afraid that when I take it to the dealer and because i have the 5100s, that they will not warranty it. Has anybody experienced this problem? Any suggestions or comments would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I feel your pain. I had the exact think happen to me, except my truck was brand new when I put my Rancho kit on. Bottom line, my uncle (shade tree mechanic) put it on and was a little heavy handed and rnded up putting a pin hole in one boot and a couple tie rod bushing bit the dust.

Took it to dealer and of course they said that the "suspension mod" voided warranty. I argued til I was blue in the face to no avail.

Two lessons I learned....Have a real mechanic do the install correct the first time and shop a different dealer. In talking with some on this forum, you'll find out that if you shop different dealers, some are WAY better than others.

In the end...it cost me $750 to fix my screw up....nobody to blame but me though.

Good luck.

Well, I think I would look into another party doing this for you, blew my CV boot out a while back wheelin and, just replaced the boot, I bought the boot kit and, had my friend, the mechanic do it for me. he said all was fine and, only the boot needed replacement.
The kicker was, that I drove with the boot dry for about 500 miles, although I would not recomend doing so! Also, he did the boot, changed out the front, and rear diffs, TC and, tranmission fluids, all syn, for 475.00

put a diff drop in it so that the cv axles are at the same angles that they were when stock-compare to a stock rig and try to get the same angle. that way you can argue that "yes is IS lifted but the cv axles are still at the stock angles"
a good toyota store will honor it. it's faster and easier than pulling the struts back out and swapping them.

I was thinking, do I really need to replace the whole cv axle or can I just replace the boot. The mechanic said something about dirt, sand, etc. damaging the axle and recommended changing the cv axle (I don't know if he is trying to get more money). Does this sound right? The boot is badly ripped and there is grease everywhere, it is really nasty).

yes he is right. if the boot is split open, dirt can get in there and damage the axle. on the other hand, most of the time you can get away with just doing the boots. a general rule is that if it's not noisy, it's not damaged. if i were you i'd just do the boots. you can get a boot kit for pretty cheap. if it's the outer boot, just tell him to leave the axle in and replace the one boot to save money.

As mentioned, if the front end is not making any noise (clicking) you should be fine. You will have to put the truck into 4 wheel drive to hear the noise.

A few questions:
How many miles would you say you've driven since the 5100's were installed?

Does the grease that is all over the underside of the truck look fresh, or is it really dirty as if it's been there for a while?

The reason I ask, if you have very few miles since the install, and the grease is really dirty and has attracted a lot of dirt, chances are the boot was torn well before the 5100's were installed.

untrue. the axles spin all the time.
This is true, but they are not under load, putting them under load could cause noises not necessarily heard when free spinning.
