How do places like Jiffy Lube clean your fuel-injection system if you tell them too? My car's fuel injection system is probably dirty because my gas pedal doesn't have the smooth motion like our other cars have. I've put STP fuel injector cleaner down the gas tank the past 2 fillups and it's helped maybe a little bit when it was in the tank but goes back when it's all gone. Anyone know a more thorough way to clean it?

Fuel system cleaners have absolutely no effect on gas pedal motion/feel. Clean/lube the throttle cable, check the assembly it connects to, and clean the throttle body.

Shops clean it the same way you just mentioned but with more powerfull chemicals and sometimes connecting the fuel rail to an outside source with higher concentrations.

If you get the REALLY cleaned, they'll take them out to run the stuff through them. but thats usually a few hundred bucks for a set and takes a few days

^ ditto on what Russ said.

As well, if you really love your car, don't go to Jiffy Lube.:

I've lubricated that stuff though, that's the thing, but it doesn't seem to work. There anything else that could be the problem?

I used to drive one of these, and I've heard from multiple people (mine did this as well) that Cressidas just naturally have "firm" gas pedals. Something to do with the cruise control system, I was told. There is no way the fuel injection system can affect the stiffness of the pedal.

^The MX73 is the same, always with a firm pedal.

But I've heard of MKII Supra guys who have improved pedal stiffness with a clean/lube of the throttle cable and body :)

Yep. Gas pedals stiff as a rod on both my 88 ad 90. Theres quite a few springs youre fighting to hit the gas, but they all do something. and FYI the cruise control cable is setup so that it doesn't pull against the gas pedal. both are setup on a one way pull: both open the throttle, neither makes the other's job harder.

I'll check my cars again if theres a spring that can be removed safely.

The thing is though, when the car is off the pedal doesn't have any resistance. It's when the car is on. Now I think my fuel filter needs to be replaced, because in the cold and in the mornings the car has to crank a few times, but once it's warmed up and everything it's fine. Ironically, when the fuel injection cleaner was in the tank the car would start up like a charm the first time in the freezing cold and everything, so that's where I'm getting the assumption it's fuel related (before I thought the spark plugs needed replacing).

Fuel filter will not have anything to do with your pedal feel.

Have you cleaned the throttle body?

Exactly where is the throttle body? The cable that you can push and it'll rev your engine? That area?
um...yes...though you might not want to be messing with things on your own if you dont know where the throttle body is.

for the umteenth time, there is no physical connection between the fuel system and the gas pedal or throttle body. your fuel system is not doing jack to your gas pedal. if anyhting its a psychological thing because when the cars off you dont give a rats ass how hard you press the pedal so you just let the weight of your foot on it freely.

Indeed you are right and I'm just going to learn to deal with it. But about my issue about it starting in the cold, how come it starts up the first time like a charm when there was STP in the gas tank but I have to crank it a few times when there isn't? Spark plugs?

Perhaps.

How old are the plugs, mileage and age wise? Though there could be a gamut of other issues causing hard starting.

The plugs were last replaced at 80,000 miles. The car now has 157,300. The car probably reached 80,000 miles 12-15 years ago. The thing is, when it's not unbearably cold or wet, the car will start up fine..even if it hadn't been driven in a few days, and if the car is still warm and everything, it'll start up fine, but recently if it's been on long drives and run a lot and you start it back up again relatively soon, the idle will be all rough and it looks like it's going to stall unless I don't give it gas.

So I'm confused as hell here.

While it may or may not solve your problem, I think it is due time to replace those plugs. There's a lot to be gained back in terms of the power loss over the years. Go NGK.

How unbearably cold does it get in your part of California? I'm assuming Northern?
