Have a 2009 Venza V6 with 43K miles. Runs perfectly, gas mileage steady at 20mpg. Dealer has been trying to get us to clean the fuel injectors and clean engine induction systems for the last 10000 miles. Nothing about this in the owner's manual, nor in recommended servicing. Since there doesn't seem to be a problem, why have this service done? What are the symptoms of a car that needs to have these services performed?

Don't do it through the dealer!

If you do they'll charge you around $350. I once did it because I was ignorant and my wife wanted a yes/no over the phone as she was standing in front of the service writer. Later that night I did a google search and found that its pure profit for the dealer.

If I had 40k or so on my car I'd dump some fuel injection cleaner in my tank, and call it a day. If it was necessary maintenance the manual would specify.

This is absolutely unnecessary at that mileage unless you are prone to constantly buying really cheap no name gas. Despite what the service manaer or the rest of the robbery gang tell, you need only to perform routinely scheduled maintenance per the booklet that came with your vehicle..... If you really feel you need to clean the injectors, Toyota sells as all can you dump into the gas tank for about $12 or so.

When my wife brought our '09 in for the brake lamp switch recall the service advisor tried to pressure her into the fuel injection cleaning and to clean and service the fuel induction system for $90 each. Our Venza only had 26,179 miles on it. We average 21-22 mpg, mostly city driving. The car is riding smoothly and the engine purring like day 1. We are due for our 30K mileage service and I am going to tell them to stuff it if they try to pressure me when I being it in to get serviced. This is just a way for the dealer to make more profit and unless you mpg is really bad or you have other issues like knocking or pinging I wouldn't worry about it and certainly not before 50K miles or more.
