If your gas cap's original gasket has failed and is throwing EVAP codes, the replacement offered for our cars is: 77316-16010. This gasket is almost as expensive as the cap itself so most understandably just get the whole cap instead. However, now you no longer have to worry about this. After playing around with some 04-07 Highlanders / RX330s at the yard, comparing my 01-03's cap and one from my 2008 RX350 (all caps and filler necks are different part numbers and vary a little in shape). The gasket between them all is the exact same 40mm ID, oddly shaped donut gasket. The fitment is identical betwen all three caps and provides a tight seal on all the filler necks.

This is what you want: 77316-33042

This part is almost a third of the price of 77316-16010 for the exact same part. This is not the first time I've seen stuff like this happen with the Toyota parts system, and I've been able to manipulate it to get the same thing for cheaper. Cross-referencing and looking around can really pay off at the end of the day. So far so good with the sealing of the cap. I'll keep driving around and will update this post if anything comes up.

Some more pics of the “secret” superseded fuel cap gasket. It is still exactly 40mm like original. It is no longer directional and is perfectly symmetrical front & back. It also has some tiny pull tabs for easier removal which don’t interfere with anything. This gasket will fit a lot more cars than listed. Probably anything with the 40mm locking gas cap. My 2002 Highlander and two RX350s came with the old design (each car oddly had different part numbers), but this cap fit all three of them identically.

Very pleased with the results of this, it’s definitely a great deal!

Ha nice. I ended up buying one from dealership after reading old posts that aftermarket ones suck. On this note, every tried to replace the Fuel door? Holy crap its a absolute nightmare, Toyota riveted it on so I had to drill it out and add nuts and bolts for the replacement door (my original one had scratches and 2 dings)

This is great information, so let's take it one further and talk about the dreaded locking gas cap! I have purchased (3) locking gas caps for my '14 Tacoma and I've gotten a CEL with every one of them. Based on the code, it has to be a gasket seal issue. I removed the seal from my OEM gas cap and put it on the Stant cap, I still got a CEL. No surprise since the Stant cap inner design is different and the OEM gasket doesn't fit right, the inside diameter of the OEM gasket is slightly larger than the Stant cap requires. I'm still looking for a cap that works, I keep hearing Stant with the Stant symbol, and Stant with the round key. I couldn't find a round key, but I did have one with the Stant symbol.

Yes, if a criminal really wants my fuel, he'll still get it, but for the price of fuel, I want an amateur to have to work for it.
