Gas fumes in cab....BAD!

Hello all!

I have a 91 4-runner that I’ve owned for ten years. It’s a V6 with 4-wheel drive, manual trans. For the past six months or so it has developed some nasty habits. I’m not sure if these items are related, but I have a hunch they are.

First and worst: it smells like gas in the cab, bad! Especially when it rains.

Second: after running for a while, when stopped at a stop light in neutral, the idle rpm goes up and down from 1000 to 1500 RPM like a pendulum. Up then down then up then….you get the idea!

Third: it’s hard to start in the mornings. It takes about 5-6 seconds with the starter engaged, and a few pumps of the pedal.

I’ve had it to a mechanics, and they said it was a cracked injector and replaced it but the problems were still there. Then they said it was the injector o-rings (or something like that) and replaced those but to no avail. I’ve taken it back three times, and they just keep replacing the o-rings saying this time it will work! I don’t think they are using official Toyota o-rings, so this may make a difference.

I spent $750+ on this repair and it looks like money down the drain! Can anyone give me some ideas on what could be wrong? Thanks for the help!

One more thing; my gas mileage has gone WAY down, to around 10 miles a gallon! I was looking under the intake manifold the other day, and just below the manifold looked wet and the fumes were particularly bad there. What is under the manifold that could be leaking fuel?

By the way, I’m not the unibomber; but I play one on TV :)
