Gas guage is always empty

Has anybody had the same problem? my gas guage is always on empty. no matter where I go, its always on 'E'. Everybody that rides in my car notices the big amber gas symbol on my dash indicating im low on gas. and this is everytime they get into my car. I called Toyota and asked for thier help but they didnt have a clue.
Basically, this all started around the time super unleaded rose to $2.95/ gal. Im not sure what I can do to fix this but if you can help, it would be much appreciated.

If you had similar problems please post your experience.

have you checked any of the TSBs?

and since you have a gen 5 you should still be under warranty with toyota?

only other thing i can think of is have you disconnected your battery to reset the ECU...that might clear it out. or you could go by Pepboys & get them to read your ECU for free to see what error codes it might be throwing out.

good luck,
Keri

Gas prices suck! I'm thinking about trying to ship some fuel home while I'm here in Iraq.

Yeah, its called the bush effect, just shell out about $30 bucks to tap off the tank.
Seriously, how much are you filling up? Is it all the way and still get low tank or after a short period of time?

You could have a bad sensor (located underneath the rear seat) or you could have had bad gas that is messing up the sensors.

Also check the guage clusters, there is currently a TSB for the 4Runner for something similar.

Thats is most likely it.... $5 is only about 2gallons of gas.... try doing about $15-$20... that will put you at the half tank mark.

If its a V6 your gonna be down at the 3/4 tank in about 3-4 days if its a 4cyl it should last about a week, maybe a little bit longer. Also it depends on your driving styles.... try not to stomp it and coming from a stop gradually increase the speed. If you are doing alot of highway driving use cruise control... it does wonders for gas conservation.

Believe it or not, your wasting more money and gas just by doing $5 at a time with that low of gas. Try to fill it up as much as possible, you should see it rise.

With the price of gas 5 dollars even using regular is not shit.... your just basically running off a vapors.
It has been said that you shouldn't run past 1/4 of a tank because that is the dirtiest of the fuel in the tank.

Absolutely. That's why I never run underneath 1/4 tank...

Steve
i couldn't tell if in his forst post he was complaining about gas prices and his inability to pay for enough gas to get the gauge above empty. if not, do that.
