I just bought a new to me 2014 and am wondering if the gauges are correct. I had an older model Corolla that got 40+ mpg, but a Camry? I am averaging 29-32 mpg around town and will probably get 35 or so hwy. Of course I'm driving easy in eco mode but 30ish around town is unbelievable to me....especially after driving my truck as my primary vehicle! Lol. So is this normal? I am also looking for an owners manual so I can figure out all the buttons on it.

TIA!

Congrats on your new to you Camry. Yes, that is pretty normal for a 2014 Camry. I have seen as high as 41 mpg while driving conservatively on the interstate in my 2017 Camry LE (which has same 2AR engine as your 2014).

For the owner's manual:

Thank you J, That is amazing mileage for the size of the car it is. I had an 06 Accord 4 cyl. and 30 mpg was it! I'm definitely loving this car!

I was also blown away by my 2015 Camry LE's (mostly highway) fuel mileage, getting 35mpg average while cruising at 75mpg.

Even traffic slowdowns don't hurt the mileage as much as expected, however short trips involving engine warm-up will quickly cause my average mpg to start dropping, as will driving above 75mpg or driving in very hilly areas.

For such a large car, it's awesome.

That's amazing mileage! I'll be shocked to see 35 mpg at interstate speeds but will find out soon.

Tires can make a difference too. My 2014.5 SE would get 40-41 MPG’s on a long uninterrupted highway trip with the original Bridgestones. When they wore out and I replaced them with Michelins, I lost about 3 MPG’s on the same trip at the same speed. Good MPG’s was probably the only redeeming quality of those Bridgestones.

I've owned both and I believe the comfort on the Michelin may be worth it. I am running 35 psi and wonder if I bumped it up a little if it would improve mileage? I do know I would give me a harder ride. Thanks

I took a 140 mile trip yesterday, 74 mph on cruise non-stop, and the display read 36.5 mpg when I shut the car off at home. Granted it was just me and I had a backpack for my clothing and the temp was unseasonal at around 65°. My trip up was the low 40's but still got 33 mpg. I was happy that my round-trip used only 1/2 tank. I would have thought it would have been a bit more as on the Eco screen the bars were flirting with 40mpg throughout.

The only way to get accurate mpg is distance traveled divided by gallons used. The car mileage think is nothing more than a guesstimate.

I’m very aware of the simple math. But would also think that in this day and age the computers do a very good job in guesstimating the amount of fuel used and guesstimating how many miles my car has driven. Now it makes me lose faith in my gas gauge and odometer so how would I really know??

You never should have had faith in the gas gauge to begin with. When you fill the tank the needle isn’t at full it is past full and when the needle is at empty there is still fuel in the tank. So you already know it’s not accurate. The odometer is probably off too. So other than getting laboratory grade gauges and a perfect testing environment, the most reliable mpg you will get is dividing the miles traveled by the gallons used.

I use that display as a rough idea of how I'm doing on mileage. Right now, we have it pegged right at 33.9-34.0mpg. I check mileage at every fill up, and doing the math it is consistently 31-33mpg. So, the car is a little overzealous, but I can still use it to tell if I'm driving better or worse, depending on if it fluctuates.

I normally have the center gauge fuel economy display set to show "Trip Fuel Economy." I know this might not be as useful as the overall tank average. Worth noting that the tank should never be completely empty thus the math becomes a little more subjective as you only know how much gas you have put in - not how much is left.

However, it's not unreasonable to expect 30+ mpg average out of a 7th Gen Camry.

Just filled up yesterday. Dashboard said 33.2 mpg for the tank. Let's see if I can do this right: 441.7 miles / 13.080 gallons = 33.7691131 mpg. Margin of error <1% in this situation. It's never worth arguing over the internet and I'll use it as a tool for how well the engine is running. This is one instance where it was nearly spot on for me. I will give you this: Toyota says the fuel tank is ~16 gallons. My light came on and I filled up (aforementioned 13 gallons) with a reported 20 miles remaining. One would think it should have been ~90 miles.

Just trying to get you to get fuel sooner rather than later. Like before it runs out. Plus even when the engine stall because of lack of fuel there is still close to a gallon in the tank. It’s the difference between capacity and useable capacity. Really important in aviation not so much in cars.
