Hi there. I have a 2006 Tacoma double cab/short bed with about 1100 miles on it. Lately, when stopped in traffic with the fan on, I occaisionally get blasted with a STRONG odor of raw gasoline inside the cab. It happens suddenly. It is strong enough that I have to immediately roll down the window to breath. After I begin moving again in traffic, the smell goes away. This phenomena may repeat itself several times in stop and go traffic, or just happen once in a while. Has anyone else experienced a similar situation?

I am taking the truck into the dealer at the beginning of next week to look into this problem.

I have been unable to find anything similar about this in this forum with a bunch of searching. It would be nice to know if this is a common problem before encountering the dealer's service department on Monday!

Thanks!

Been on most toyota forums for about 5 months and have never seen anyone else describe what you are talking about.

Hope your not a smoker, make sure not to light up when stopped if you are.

Some people have complained about a exhaust sulfer odor from their trucks, not sure if that could possibly be what you smelling? Just a thought.

Here's another vote for it being uncommon - I've been lurking here since the introduction of the new Tacoma, and can't recall seeing mention of this. Definitely worth getting checked out, even though they'll probably just tell you they can't duplicate the problem (seems to be a favored diagnosis of most Toyota techs from what I've seen.)

I think I had that same smell on my 2006. I was in my driveway going into my garage and it smelt like gas coming from the engine compartment. I looked all around for anything suspicious looking, but did not see anything. It has happened like twice to me.

Hello again. I read about the sulfurous odor here as well, but this is definitely a raw gasoline smell. There is just no mistaking it. My thought was maybe the vapor recovery canister was getting saturated while my vehicle was at a standstill (running at idle) and the external air inlet for the truck's HVAC system was sucking in some of this escaping hydrocarbon vapor. Either that, or I have a small leak in the fuel injector pressurized loop feed.

I am interested to hear that "Turtleboy" may have detected the same problem in his '06 Tacoma. He has the same model as I do. I hope this is not the first sign of a future factory recall!

Thanks,

I have the same truck as you. What was build date on yours? I smelt the exact gas smell you are talking about. It was when my truck was ideling and it seemed like the engine fan was blowing it out from the engine compartment. This was when I was at about 1000 miles. I have about 2100 now, but have not smelt the gas since or I just have not noticed it because I keep the air recirculating and windows up.
