I have a 1985 with the 22r and only 92k miles on it. When I'm in gear (most often downshifting to slow down) and I get to the point of having barely any gas or none whatsoever(i know ure always supposed to have gas while in gear), i can hear a "rattling" in what i think is the gear box (hard to tell where its coming from when u are in a moving vehicle, but i can somewhat feel it in the stick also). Personally i think it sounds like some real small metal object is tumbling around in there.

Does anyone know what this is, or have experienced it themselves? How do I fix it?

have you been really rough on your tranny. like not shifting with the clutch all the way in or grinding the gears. it could be a gear or something chipped off and just rooling around in there. you might also try replacing your tranny fluid.
