Gear Shift for AUTO

Hi, I have a 2000 celica GT-S (AUTO) and wen i floor my pedal, the engine starts to lag and it doesnt shift to the next gear and when i let go of the pedal. My engine then makes a noise and i have to press it again to shift it to the next gear. I dont know if this makes sense because am not really sure how to decribe it. Sorry!! but any help????

hmm, weird one. i would start with checking the fluid level of the transmission, and checking for vacuum leaks. can you still downshift with the triptonic?
