92' Camry , 5-speed 2.2L (5SFE) ::

I was driving on the highway, and my engine SHUT OFF. I didn't hear any
sputtering or other typical engine distress sounds, just OFF.

I pulled off and found myself in a rather dangerous position on the sholder, in Texas during the heat of the day and rush hour....with my pregnant girlfreind .....long story short, I got it towed to my apartment and have been working on it.

My engine tries to start, but the spark plugs arn't sparking. I replaced the distributor cap and rotator, and made sure all my belts where in place and intact. No change. There seems to be an oil leak that may be spraying oil on my timing belt and around my alternator, but I don't think that should prevent my car from starting.

Anyone have any ideas?

ya, that's what i figured...i didn't check the coil because i don't know what i'm looking for, and I don't know how to put it back together and not screw up my timing n' such. Though a rebuilt distributor is only $65...so i'm tempted to replace it myslef.

thanks for the help!

I don't know if there is a inherent problem, but my Camry has 190k miles on it....and there seems to be oil in the distributor...hmmm

^ Distributor shaft seal is bad.

Theres also a seal inside the distributor, but I've heard that Toyota does not sell that seal. You have to buy the entire distributor.

had the same problem with a nissan, the distrobuter shaft is also worn out as well, rember a junk yard part in this case isnt always the best part that one might also be worn out as well.
