One bit of info I can give. No matter what state you live in or which manufacture you purchased from your not totally screwed after the warranty date. So long as the vehicles maintenance/failure records have each of your reported issues the manufacture has to service those problems if they surface for one year after the warranty date. To be clear, it can be for only the warranted problems reported and documented by a authorized service center.
I can back this up from 3 different vehicles. This is generally not a policy the dealerships will tell you but there are laws in place for this exact situation. Hopefully you won't have to go that far, because it's a major PIA.
