I've been on Toyota's case for about 6 months now about the terrible voice recognition in my 2016 XLE. Apparently, a lot of other people have been complaining as well. Finally, they have done something about it. There is an upgrade to the entire voice system available. My dealer did it on Friday. I haven't had a chance to fully test it yet, but the first couple checks look promising. I don't think the maps have been changed (i'll check that too).
This change is to the basic software.
Unfortunately, the upgrade wiped the entire address book (50 entries). On the upside, that will give me an opportunity to fully test the voice recognition.

No - it was meant to correct the 2016's totally F---ed up voice recognition system. I'll check this week to see if that's true.

Do you know if this affects the '15 Camry XLE also??

I have not used the voice reconition yet!! [Don't drive enough] and I usually pull over to dial and then start driving again using bluetooth.

Also, how did you find out about the update?
Persistence! I had previously contacted Toyota directly, both on line and by telephone and email - Total stonewall - not even a reply. Then I started to haunt dealer service - very friendly - sympathetic - again nothing. Finally I got really PO-ed and had a meeting with the dealer sales manager. I basically told him that after 15 years this was going to be my last Toyota (I meant it). I started getting calls from service - I was told that there was a factory mod in the works and they would notify when they got it. That was in Mid-September. Finally, having not heard from them by the beginning of November, I went to service and asked. That's when I was told that "Oh, we got an upgrade at the beginning of October" The upgrade took about 45 minutes to download into the car from a Thumb Drive. As I said earlier, the first test I ran looks encouraging. I have to put in about 50 -60 addresses and I'm going to try to do it using Voice Rec. rather than keying in the info.

Thanks for the info. I wonder why this can't be done over the air? Or maybe it can?
Don't think so. The software encompasses everything in the Radio that relates to voice control- GPS, Scout, Telephone functions. Its a very large file, probably not as large as the GPS map data base, but something that might take a couple of hours to download over the air.

Anyway we can get screen shot of your system info screen. I would like to compare your firmware version to what my Camry has. Maybe of help also when requesting update from Toyota.

I've attached 4 screen shots from the Nav info screens. You can see that there are entries for CU.20.14 dated 11/11/16. It looks like a lot of the systems were updated, including Bluetooth. I hope this helps.

Also, I entered about 10 addresses into the system. In every case where the pronunciation of a street name was unambiguous, the system accepted the voice entry without a problem. I spoke in a normal voice. This is quite an improvement - finally!

I'm super curious where this update came from. I checked your photos with my current software , and all the numbers are the same with the exception of a few, so obviously something is different.

I called Toyota directly and they have no recent updates to the hardware or software. I even mentioned someone having an update recently and how the software numbers were different, and they said they have not released any updates anytime recently.

Not dis crediting that they did an update, just wondering where your dealer got it from

They found it because they were under a lot of pressure. The update came out somewhere around the end of September. I will try to get the description and id# of the update. As I said earlier, I've been bugging them (always politely) for over 6 months.

There may be some reference to a technical service bulletin # on your service order.
