Handling: early 80’s vs 91

I presently own a 91 rolla wagon front wheel drive. Once in a while I see early 80’s wagons on eBay. Which car has the better handling in your opinion? Does one have an advantage over the other with some mods? Are there more parts available for the newer car? Anyway thanks in advance.

Cheers

totally different cars, 80's wagons up to 87 in most countries were RWD after 87 they were FWD, both types have different handling characteristics and capabilities so you can't really compare them.
For sure rwd das different handling traits than an fwd car and I would rather have a rwd car any day, but…The E70 does have a solid axle vs an IRS for the AE92. For example the early 80’s Volks GTI seemed to be a good handling car compared to other rwd offerings. Maybe I should save my coins for that IS 300 SportCross… except I would have to spend more cash converting from auto to manual tranny!!
I believe they came with manual transmissions, I know after 02 or 03 the IS was available with a 6spd, I'm sure the sportcross would have the option.

2002 was the first year with the manual transmission (2001 being the first year for the IS in North America). Manual transmission was a W55 5-speed. Only the Altezza RS200 had the 6-speed (Beam's 3S-GE).

The SportCross (Wagon) was never offered in manual, only automatic.

Well according to Car And Driver the Sport Cross was only available as an automatic.

“SportCross; with its hatchback and slightly increased load floor, it's less a station wagon and more a five-door sedan. It's available only with an automatic.”

Any idea how complex or expensive to swap to a stick setup?
I recall seeing a Sportcross 5spd (my whoops on the 6spd) for sale before on autotrader. :whatthe:

Maybe the 5spd was available in Canada, we always get some weird options that the US doesn't get, but then we get shafted on other things. :dunno:
Do all the Corolla wagons have rear leaf springs?
I know some of the earlier AE92 models did, but I am not sure about after that.

AE101 ?

The AE92 never had rear leaf springs, not even on the All-Trac models (which used a 5-link setup like the AE86 with coil springs).

I don't think the Corolla had leaf springs at all since the mid-late 70's.

I might have been mistaken, but that is what I thought. I stand corrected.
Looked into it further, it appears all the Corollas had rear leaf springs until 1979, then from 80-83 the wagons had leafs and the rest had coils. From 1984 on, they all had coils.
