I've mounted my Passport 9500 to the rear view of my Limited using a mount that I bought a few years ago for my old car. But now I need to find a way to hard wire the detector so I don't have that ugly coiled wire hanging down.

Any suggestions on how I can tap into a 12v lead near the rear view mirror?

While we're on the subject, I also have my Nexus One cell phone car mount attached to the windshield beside the rear view mirror and I'd like to hard wire it also. The problem is, the mount just like the cell phone has a micro-usb plug. How can I easily convert the 12v to supply the power 5v Micro USB?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the responses and the links. I do have the Homelink and since the power for the auto-dimming feature is controlled by the switch I can use that but the next question is, where is the best place to splice into it. If I use that T-tap from eBay, I doubt it will fit inside the rear view mirror casing. Any suggestions?

For the cell phone car mount, I did find some 12v to 5v converters but their not small and I don't see anyway that the unit will fit in the headlining, so I may have to run a wire down to fuse box anyway. If so, maybe I'll run them both down to fuse box. It just worries me about running a line around and/or near the air bags.

If you remove the center "console" at the top (where the map lights, sunglass holder, power door buttons, etc), the rear view mirror wires will lead up there and there should be plenty of room up there. Additionally, there may also be a plug up there where the rear view mirror wires plug into a harness.

I just did this over the weekend with a friend and his Prius. Although its no Sienna, you can get an idea of how Toyota does it and what parts need to be removed.

Look specifically at page 3, figure 2-2 and 2-3 (this is where they remove the center console up above)

Thanks for the info Tracksyde. It's a little confusing at first but after you read through it a couple of times it makes sense, for the most part. One question though, did you use the panel removal tool? If not, what did you use as a replacement?

I actually bought a panel popper kit for a different project (in the Sienna). So yes, we did try to utilize the panel popper to remove the overhead console pieces in the Prius.

I havent looked at the Sienna's that closely. But on the Prius, the sunglass holder section was separate, that was easy to remove by hand. And because its a "harder" plastic, there wasnt much flex in it to even get a tool behind there. The main overhead console section was probably easier with a tool. But if you have a long flat head screwdriver, you could probably use that to slip in there and wiggle/pop the white plastic fasteners free from their hole.

Here's the panel popper kit I bought: http://www.harborfreight.com/5-piece-auto-trim-and-molding-tool-set-67021.html

There's a coupon in the back of Car & Driver that makes this kit $4. So if you have a Harbor Freight in the area and you want to get a set of panel poppers, then this is a great deal. I mainly wanted to use the tools because they are plastic and less prone to damaging/scratching the panels, versus, say, a screwdriver. You can see its not a particularly high-tech tool set and you probably only need one of them (the long, skinny and flat one, 2nd from the left in the picture), So if you're careful, the screwdriver isnt a bad alternative, I think.

Installing Homelink mirror

Hi - This looks way beyond me. Should any Tyota dearership be able to do this install?

Thanks in advance for any reply.

Thanks so much for the reply - and we're you ever right. NO Toyota dealer will touch this. Is there anything I should be careful of or ask the stereo installer? I've seen one post where the homelink stayed on all the time - they said just make sure it's not wired to "constant power" and you should be set. I've probably got that wrong but it's something I remember seeing.
Thanks again for the post and information - very helpful!

take it to a local stereo shop. they should be able to do it. i doubt any toyota dealer will be willing to do customized work.

I wanted to use a MirrorTap but i just didn't know which wires to tap into. The wiring harness in my 2012 SE w/ Homelink has 3 wires (red, white, and blue). I'm assuming that the red is the 12V.
