Hello,

We purchased Corolla Hatchback 2019 last August. We love it.

But today I noticed a strange noise coming from the rear wheel area. I parked it as usual in my garage, no noise was coming after I switched it off and locked. A few hours later, come to the garage to take garbage out and the corolla is generating wirring electrical noise somewhere around the rear wheels (my guess would be that it has to do with the paring brake, but don't really know). This is the second time it happened, a few weeks ago and today again. Maybe more in between as mostly my wife drives it and she is not very attentive to such things.

I recorded the noise today but don't know how to attach a short .mov file here.

Anyone else noticed the noise?

The fuel pump never runs when ignition is off.

What you're hearing are normal Fuel Evaporation Leakage Checks...The noise is caused by the vacuum pump inside the fuel evaporation leakage check module.
My bad, I meant to say fuel system check. I was thinking what you said but my fingers typed it differently than what I was thinking. :)

Our 2018 Highlander does the same thing. Same noise, several hours after shutting the car off. If you look in the owners manual, there is probably a section somewhere that describes this self-diagnostic check. At least there is in our Highlander manual.

My 2016 GTI would do the same thing too.
Most vehicles do it, the ECU is running an enhanced EVAP/Purge system check after the engine vacuum has bled off. It's part of enhanced OBD-II requirements.

However, never heard it on our Corolla. And wow, that's some right skookum crustiness on your car!

Approximately five hours after the engine is turned off, you may hear sound coming from under the vehicle for several minutes. This is because the fuel evaporation leakage check is performed. It does not indicate a malfunction.

That is so weird. The noise is very annoying and scary sounding.

My third Toyota, I had never heard this. And I believed evap checks were done only while driving.

Though my newest Toyota before the hatchback is 2008 sienna.

Actually, it's been in car for years (OBDII)... including your 2008 Sienna. It's kind of normal to seldomly notice it since we generally don't stand by our cars for hours waiting for something to happen :p plus it happens only when specific conditions are met (temperature, fuel level, previous type of driving), meaning not all the time. That's why it is still one of the most FAQ to pop-up on forums.

2021 Woohoo, this is my third Toyota and 1st time I hear this, for how long does it run for? I just happened to go into the garage to take the garbage when I hear the noise, can ming out of the back of my 2020 Corolla ES. As someone mentioned we don't stand by our vehicle after we park, but I did a few months ago when I bought it, I did a graphine treatment and I spent 2 days preping and applying the treatment and no noise form the car.

EDIT: found the answer to this one on page 8 of the manual (doh!) "Approximately five hours after the engine is turned off, you may hear sound coming from under the vehicle for several minutes. This is the sound of a fuel evaporation leakage check and, it does not indicate a malfunction"
