So my head gasket went, between #3 and #4. I'm showing -.007 out so I will resurface the head. About 9000 miles on rebuilt 22r.
I didn't do the rebuild as I got the car from a friend just to get it out of his way. (it was his mothers, she passed in '02, it was parked since then till I got the car in '12)
This is a California car and will keep it smog legal, IF, I ever decide to sell her it makes it easy.

A question for you old school Toyota guys and gals, When ordering the head gasket kit what is the difference between the '81-'84 22r and the '85 and newer 22r's. The heads seem to be different too as I was just planning for the worse.

The head and block dimensions are different between the 2 year ranges, and a lot of things are not interchangeable between them.

When I brought the head in to the machine shop the guy said "I haven't seen one of those in 20 years". Long conversation about it. He explained the differences.
He also said this head has been resurfaced before. Now...................
Where can I get a OEM TOYOTA headgasket for her (reasonably priced). I have an aftermarket set (Ebay) and will use it, but , would prefer an OEM head gasket. Or does anyone have an opinion on aftermarket head gaskets, what say?

How about a Toyota dealer for an OEM gasket ?
Another good source for 22R rebuild parts is engnbldr.com

Update Head gasket repair

Finally finished. Toyota had the gasket and a hose that ran from block to intake manifold.
Purred like a kitten, until , all of a sudden she started running RICH. Enough to burn your eyes. Plugged the AAP connections, no change.
This happened after making final connections of vacuum lines (had 3 to connect that I couldn't find, I cannot believe how many vac lines there are), ran engine for a while, turned off, started an hour later, died, restarted and started running rich.
So..... it's not the AAP , where do I start????

All better. Pulled the top of the carb off, was a tiny piece of fuel hose that wouldn't allow the needle to close. Very little crapola in the bottom of the bowl, that's good, huh?
My baby is back. I can park the big Cummins Dodge and zip around town again.
