Hello everyone,

I just installed a Kenwood Excelon DPX592BT from Crutchfield into my 2007 Corolla S. I used the Posi-Product connectors from Crutchfield to connect the two harnesses.

The installation was pretty simple and straight forward but now I've noticed that I have a slight hum/white noise sound coming out of the radio when the volume is off or low. I can tell that there is a hum because it is gone when the radio is set to STANDBY.

The hum is happening under all modes (Tuner, CD, Bluetooth audio, etc.) so I don't believe it is static from the radio antenna.

During the install I called Crutchfield to confirm that my wiring was correct. The tech verified that I had everything setup correctly. I initially called because I wasn't sure if I needed to connect the ground to the chasis or to the metra OEM wiring adapter. The tech confirmed that I can go ground-to-ground into the stock wiring harness as the Toyota has a ground setup already.

The noise doesn't increase or decrease with accelerator or whether or not the car is on or off.

From what I've read this means that I have a ground issue or a connection issue. Note: I did not wrap the posi-product connectors with electrical tape.

What steps would you guys recommend I take to troubleshoot?

I was planning on ditching the Posi connectors and getting some regular electrical connectors.

Thanks for reading the wall of text!

Did you figure this out yet?

I did see a review of a newer kenwood double din headunit where they measured an atypical high amount of noise on the outputs for an aftermarket headunit. They also said that the pre-amp outputs clipped before the stated output voltage was reached.

Do you have a link on this? I am interested in replacing the HU on my 15' Camry LE with a kenwood ddx9903s, and if this is an issue I'd like to know.

Thx.

I have had no luck in resolving the problem. I brought it to an audio shop and they recommended that I ground the radio to the metal tube behind the radio on my Corolla. I was told that this would be the best area to ground to. I will note that the tech said it didn't sound like a ground issue.

Other than that they advised it may not be worth the money to track down. They said that bench testing the unit wouldn't be worth it.

I think I'm going to tap that metal and ground the radio soon so I will keep you guys posted.

Where are you at in dutchess county... I'm right across the river in orange. Let me know if you need any assistance with your audio or just wanna chat. I'm in the process of installing a competition level sound quality system in my 2015 Camry and seems few and far between people around this area are interested in sound quality. Months ago I compared side by side, for several hours, the top of the line double dins from the big three (Kenwood, Alpine, Pioneer). The closest high end shop who I feel really know what they are doing around here is near Danbury, CT. They had all three units on their sound board for test driving.

Thanks for the response. I'm in Fishkill.
After reading, looks like I'll be rethinking the HU idea. I was set on the Kenwood due to that radio picking up all the functionality that the stock HU provides (headlight delays, tpms, etc.), the pioneer and alpine do some but not all. Seems Kenwood is the only one does everything.
My plan was to go over to Sounds Incredible and have them install, but now looks like a rethink unless of course Kenwood fixes the noise stuff..
Don't want to highjack this thread, so back to original.

Thanks again.

Don't want to hijack either but would really like to know what functionality the Kenwood has that the Pioneer does not? I've got the Alpine/Idatalink Maestro RR TO2 combo and the only real functionality I lost was the nav promps displaying on the auxillary screen between the gauges & changing the color scheme of the aux screen between the gauges. All the TPMS/vehicle options are there and even some that would require a trip to the dealer or techstream using the original head unit. Here's the thread I started on it: http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/310-7th-generation-2012/1402241-replaced-2015-entune-premium-w-nav-non-jbl-headunit-alpine-8-maestro.html <<< we can further discuss over there if you like...

Sounds Incredible is the place I was talking about. The staff over there is second to non.

Thanks for the information.

Do you recommend I ground the radio to another ground or should I just return the Kenwood and go another brand?

My opinion.... You can try it but since the hum disappears in standby then seems like changing grounds would not help as a noisy ground would present itself regardless. Also, taping the crimp caps or changing to a different type likely would not remedy the noise either.
