I am pulling the transaxle to replace the ring gear (and possibly clutch) on the flywheel.

88 Camry 3sfe 5 sp fwd.

Putting the jack stands under the frame rail.
How high should I be for easy trans removal?

OR should I use floor jack under engine crossmember and put them under the pinch rail?

Go with jack stands on the pinch rails. You will need to remove the front sway bar mounts, which are otherwise a good spot to put jack stands at the front of the car.

As for height... it doesn't have to be too high. You can drop the trans onto a couple layers of cardboard and slide it out. It isn't very heavy... (try that with the V6 manual... MUCH heavier ;))
