Help! Multiple issues that may be related

I have a 94 pickup 2WD RE22 engine and the idle is surging. I did read through the "Please Read" sticky, but believe this is weird enough to warrant a post. The idle surges and the tempature gauge goes to hot. The air blows cold instead of hot, and the battery and brake light stay on. I have read about cleaning the trottle body, adjusting idle screw, that the 2 lights are probably the alternator, and the cold air is probably thermostat. I also know I have a small leak at the exhaust manifold. I just think it is weird that these all happened at the same time.

To be hoenest, this is a beater truck. I drive my motocycle most of the time. I hope I do not have to spend a bunch of money on this. I have not done any hose testing or anything because the weather is pretty crappy here this morning. Hopefully better tomorrow.

Thanks in advance.

Could simply be low on coolant, or have an air pocket, or the t-stat.

... and the battery and brake light stay on.
As you said, it usually means the alternator, and it's typically the brushes.

It may just be a coincidence that it's all happening at once, and is unrelated.
Thanks fourwd1! I have been reading over the past few days and coolant is always mentioned. We have had sleet and generally bad weather, so I will flush it this afternoon.
UPDATE for surging idle and battery\Brake light staying on

They WERE related. The belt for the water pump and alternator had come off the pulley. Lossened the aleternator, put it back on, tightened it up, and viola, fixed. I am going to replace them all this weekend. I know that oil leaks will cause a belt to jump off.

Thanks!
