Hi, I have a 1992 Toyota Corolla DX 5spd. We just changed the oil pan and gasket because the old one was pretty rustly and pitting, All that went well. We weren't sure of that being the only reason or part of the reason why its leaking oil, Its getting pretty bad now.. Just trying to find out whats the most common gaskets to go out on these motors. Oil is definitly leaking from that front corner part of the motor on the passanger side by the timing cover. If it was the head gasket wouldn't the car run like shit and be burning fumes? The car runs very strong and doesn't burn anything except every once in while if it sits for long time then fire it'll blow smoke out the tail pipe for a second.

is the oil just on the botton of the block right around the oil pan......or is it all around the crank pully?

I'd go with all over sorta like its sorta by the alternator bracket but I don't think its on the back part of the block just that front corner on the passanger side.

Get a cherry picker and pull the engine.:(

I'm not saying it's definitely the main engine seal. I would take it to a mechanic you trust and have him take a peak at it.

If it was the head or valve cover gasket you will probably have a performance hit. It shouldn't be too hard to check the valve cover and head gasket for leaks. Drive it for a while and pop the hood and check around the edges. If it's leaking from there you should be able to tell. Take a cloth and wipe it around the edges and look for wet oil.

man mechanics don't know a darn thing...yo man..this guy had an oil leak and i told him it was his rear seal....but he didn't listen to a stupid little kid....so he brought it to a mechanic.....and they replaced the seal between his driveshaft and tranny (rwd) and it was still leaking oil......

you don't really have to lift the engine out to change the front seal....it is possible to do it in the car....but it is really hard.

yeah the problem is I've never taken these motors apart, well I've never really taken any motor apart that far. Anyone in the chicago area who would help me? I mean I'm handy and learn fast if I had directions but i'd feel more comfrontable doing it with someone who has done it before.

Umm, I think your gonna have some trouble getting someone to volunteer their time to help you replace a main engine seal. Even if you don't have to pull the engine, it's no picnic. :(

If you really want to do it yourself you should get yourself some books and read up on it. It won't be easy.

Hei all and Foolish86!

I noticed a transmission oil leak between the gearbox (manual 5 speed) and the left (longer) driveshaft. Note FWD, MT 5 spd.

I understood it a seal between the driveaxle and the gearbox(differential). Can that be replaced without taking and dismantling the gearbox?

Is it difficult to replace that seal? Does the gearbox has to come out the engine?

if it is the cam seal or engine front main they are both easy as pie to do, you dont need to pull the engine just take off all the belts, jack up the car put a jack stand with a block on it under the engine and lower it slowly to lift the engine, take off the timing belt covers loosen the Tbelt tensioner take off the belt on top, and remove the cam gear take a hook and carefully take the seal out, the engine main seal is the same way but on the bottom of the engine i suggest you do it at the same time and change your Tbelt too, i changed my Tbelt at about 175k and changed both seals and all of my oil leaks went away
