Newbie here and hoping for some advice on sloppy, loose steering. At wits end. I've been to the dealer three times, and Firestone once (they saw me coming). Problem is:
- Steering is unpredictable, loose, no longer precise
- Steering wheel does a 180 for even a slight right or left turn
- Whining nose when backing out of parking space or pulling into
- Sways / fishtailing / nosedive feeling upon acceleration, braking, and on any road that is not completely smooth and straight
- Steering wheel does not lock anymore when turned off
- In general, have to be constantly vigilant as to where the car is going. Ice, snow, rain conditions are further complicating the problem and driving is no longer fun and I don't feel safe either.

I've had two alignments in the past 30 days and new tires (Dunlop Sport 4000) installed, all per dealer's suggestion as remedy.

Any advice appreciated!

When did this start? After the alignments? Your car is not safe and I'd be surprised if a dealer let you drive off in that condition! The accident liability would be high and costly. Your risking your life and others if you drive in that condition.

The intermediate shaft sub assembly was recalled on your car for noise complaints. A newer design was issued but complaints and service bulletins continue even to today.
Rather than replace them all, Toyota now just recommends lubricating the shaft.

Thanks for all the info. I took it back today-they lubed shaft for the noise, checked struts and tie rods. ($0). After 2 test drives, they said nothing's wrong with steering or handling. Blamed it on the roads. Also, this gradual deterioration in steering began shortly after front brakes done 7/07. I thought it was the tires at first--5 yrs old. Alignments were recent, to "cure" problem. Maybe I'm just nuts, but after 7 years of owning it, I know how my car feels! Thank you again for responding.
