Hi Group:

I'm going to install a Cobra 75WX in my 06 DB. I will mount the remote hookup in the rear of the console (under and inside the center console box. I'll run mic/control up and out of the center console so I can place / store in little cubby under and to the right of steering wheel.

Question WHAT antenna would be best and where???

I do have a 4ft firestick II that I could use. Most handy location would be fender mount, like across hood from stock radio antenna. I have heard that the Wilson wire / whip antennas are good and the center of roof is best location due to signal bounce off lots of flat metal.

NOTE: - during winter I have a ARE canopy on which I mount a large fiberglass Packasport box for skiis etc., that might interfer with center roof locate, but would it also interfer with reception??

Any insight and guidance would be appreciated!!!

Thanks,

I've always done fender mounts, just use tall enough whip to get well above the roof. I'd worry about unnoticed till it's too late leaks with a roof mount. Also, on those rare occasions when you have to park in city type parking with a low ceiling, you can grab the fender mount type whip and hold it down while you find a parking spot. I've seen hooks for that too.

I'm buying an '07 Dbl Cab 4x4 Long Bed in the next day or two when (if??) the dealers get a truck on site. Been getting kind of a run around. Oh well. Anyway, I haven't had a chance to figure out where the radio's going yet. In the good 'ol days you could put them in the dash somewhere, but no more.

I have a 4ft Firestik that I mounted in the bed, but since you'll be using a cap I guess that's not an option. You can go with a magnetic base antenna and mount it in the center of the roof. Then just run the cable inside a cracked window.

They make a flat mount (or you can fab one) that sits between the bed and the shell, sticking out from the side a ways. At the moment I'll be using a regular mirror mount on the bed rails just like the bike mount attachments. Plan to use the flat mount when I get a shell, or a mount on the front bumper if/when I ever get an ARB/similar.

I really didn't like the way the hood channel mount was going to look. Have the same antenna you have, though I was thinking about going to one of their thinner ones. Firestick's page has quite a bit of info on it about where and how to mount, pros and cons.

I'm still trying to figure out where to put the radio though.

Heh guys.. thanks for the great ideas. I/m getting great advice from other siters too. I may go with a Wilson mini Will or the 1000 with 3 ft whip, Since I have the Yakima system on ARE to mount the Packasport box, I think I may fab a mount that fits into rail system for the Yakima towers and mount my antenna there and then run the antenna out a lower drain grommet at rear of cab and up to that mount.

I have heard nothing but good on the Cobra 75WX cb, which I now have, I can conceal all the connections under console and then run the radio (integrated into mic) out the console tunnel and use the little cubby low and right of steering wheel as storage.

Thanks,

Fender mount (modded Firestik MK-184R and Hustler HQ-27) is my favorite. Kept this system with Fire Ring feedline when I sold my F-250.

I'm going with the Wilson 1000 w/groundplane kit until I decide about the fender mount.
