hey guys, ive searched this and cant find exactly the answer i was looking for. every time i start my 1mz when the engine is cold, it revs up to 2000 sometimes even a little higher depending on how cold it is. but it takes about 5-10 minutes for the rpms to come down to under 1000. the weird thing to me is that it will do the same thing regardless of the temp outside. i had a 95 1mz (both have over 100K) and it did the same thing. the only reason i ask is because im just nervous dropping it into gear at such a high rpm. any one have the same problem?

that does seem a little high, but its normal for a car to have higher revs when cold then drop when its warm. it does this to warm the motor. for reference, my 4 banger revs to 1200-1500 when cold, then drops to about 600-800 after about 10 minutes. if the car runs fine and the rpms do drop when the car it warm, i wouldnt worry much about it.

My old Corolla, my mom's new Camry, and my current Accord all rev to around 1500-2000 when it's cold outside and stay there 'til the engine warms up. I assure you, it's perfectly normal. Putting it in gear should immeiately bring the revs down a bit, assuming you have an automatic.

Yup all camrys do that. You cant put it in gear? if i dont feel likwe waiting i just drive and shift under 2000rpm untill its warm.

Provided the computer has control of the idle valve, the compression, mechanical timing, fuel, and ignition are in even a broad range of acceptible.
The engine will idle at whatever the the computer wants it to idle at with noe xceptions.

Your engines are all perfectly fine.

As people have said... prity sure its normal, although 2000RPM etc seems high Im sure all cars are different. Mine personally on start up jumps to 2000-2500RPM then once idling is at just under 2000RPM and slowly goes down after that. If you have auto like myself, putting it into gear will reduce the RPM... and there is defintely no need to wait 10mins etc until the revs drop, the car revs high for a reason, its trying to warm up to get to efficient operation

this morning it was 21F outside, and i started the engine(99 1mz stickshift), saw the tach jumped to 2100rpm, and some whistle noise, i let it idle for 5 seconds, then start driving. didn't realize anything abnormal.
