Of late I have noticed that the corolla 2004 starts at relatively high RPMs. Techstream readout shows car starts at about 1275, reaches a high of 1600 before settling down to 742. Takes about 10 minutes to reach the steady state. This was when the ambient temp as per TS was 69F.

The vacuum hose at the back of the manifold is in place properly.

I have already (in the last 2 years/25K miles) -

1) Replaced the intake manifold gasket with the orange one. I had observed RPMS in the range of 800-1000 after the replacement for a long time.

2) replaced PCV valve and the hose

The vibrations also seem to be a tad stronger than before.

Where do I start?

Which way are you relating to, and in which conditions exactly?
Around 1800-2100 rpm on initial cold start up and settles down to around 800 rpm after a few minutes. The warmer the ambient temperature the quicker it settles down to 800 rpm. Much more noticeable when outside temps dip below the 40's.

That is normal. I made a video of it below (76 degrees, cols start from a week no running, in Florida). It took nearly 3 minutes to drop below 1000 RPM, 5 to below 800, and 6 to settle around 750 RPM. Start was right around 1600 RPM. In colder weather (below 50's) it idles higher for longer.

Back in the day you had to choke your motorcycle at 4,000 rpms for 10 minutes to get it going in cold weather... a 2k choke on a modern car is normal... the poor girl is trying to get to operating temp ASAP. The engine races on purpose to make this all happen quicker. IF there was a vacuum leak the high-idle woudn't 'settle down' to ~800 rpm.. i'd still be high(er) all the time... and there would likley be 'rough starting' in the cold weather too...

What do you mean by 'cold'? 15 degrees Celcius? Do you shovel a lot of snow in the morning? No, it's never really cold in DR.

I live here by cold im not saying 15 degrees, normal temp here is around 24 to 30 in morning is around 23 or 22 sometimes and depends on where you live, and as i said i live with sea in front wich cause cold breezes.

Its all at the morning after 8am it isnt cold

Thanks guys for a healthy discussion.

Invader, my corolla is automatic. So I guess the TSB does not apply in my case.

Hardtop, I have a very similar pattern. If you are comfortable with it, then I have nothing to worry about .

Julicrazy, you should replace the intake manifold gasket. In the words of the wise here - it is a matter of when it will fail, not if.

Anyway, I decided to go back in and check the torque on the intake manifold and keep an eye on the behavior in future.

I am planning to get the car painted ($$$) and wanted to make sure that the car would last me a long time.

04 Corolla in OK here. Also getting just shy of 2k on cold starts right now. Then it slowly comes down. Also replaced intake gasket. Before replacing it would jump all over the place. I was also concerned, but based on my research it seems normal for cooler weather.
