Can't say without knowing what codes were thrown. Saying it won't start and a light doesn't say much.

Could be a number of things but I'd start by giving the battery a boost to see if it will start. Then go from there

Any check engine light the AWD system is deactivated.

Sorry but it's impossible to diagnose it over the net. Take it into dealer or trusted mechanic.

In case anyone else stumbles on this with a Google search, I have a 2014 Highlander LE Plus AWD, same situation: lights came on, car wouldn't start and loud grinding sounds. Swapped out the old battery for a new one and it started right up. Save the towing costs
