Hi,

For the new HL08, manual suggest oil chnage every 5K miles...but I have seen ppl chnaging oil after 3K miles...I have done mine at 5K miles and now it is due for 2nd one( i am touching 9K mark this week)....

Is it OK to do oil chnage every 5K miles...or we have to do every 3K miles?

Doesn't suprise me they said 6 months when I bought it, since the dealership (Toyota West in Columbus, OH) is a joke as far as the sales office goes. They seem to have no clue about what they're selling, but their service center seems to be on the ball.

Time or mileage is referenced for OCI. Too many owners forget about the time portion. Whichever comes 1st is required!!!!!!!
The 5k interval was created to annoy all the owners that ABUSED the earlier 7.5k(time forgotten) OCI. Neglect caused sludge and class action issue.

Nothing wrong with maintaining your vehicle. 3k OCI's are kinda excessive with todays oils. Name brand SM/GF4 performance is excellent compared to oils from only a couple of years ago. With the cost of oil skyrocketing, why waste it?????

Synth + 5k intervals for now. Once shes broken in, I'll UOA it and push the intervals to 7.5k or more. M1 EP, RP, Ams...... are some oils that can easily go an extended interval, especially if much highway driving is being done.

Time based changes help prevent neglect caused by owners who do more local and short trip driving.

SM/GF4 rated oil (make sure it is an API licensed oil- some claim to "exceed" API and are not even on the API list!) will do 5K fine.

However- if many of these apply changing more often is a good idea....

1) Short trips. This is harder on oil/motors than anything else. The engine never gets hot enough to get clean & sludge builds up.
2) Towing
3) Alot of hills
4) Extreme hot or cold conditions
5) Very dusty conditions

Changing conventional motor oil every 3 or 4k under these conditions makes sense. Full synthetic will go longer though short trips all the time will mess it up faster as well.
