Hit a dear in my new truck ;(

Well, I’ve only had my truck for 4 months and just hit 3600 miles. Now it’s time for the body shop. Last night a deer ran out in front of me. My choice was him or the ditch, so I took him out! Well, I tried to. The SOB got up and ran after he tumbled across the road. Doesn’t looks like he did too much damage. But it’s enough that I’m going to have to file a claim with my insurance. I’m guessing about 2k in damages. Fender, headlight assembly, maybe a new bumper, and who knows what else. I ended up with hair wedged between the tire and rim and what I believe is deer s**t down the side of the truck. It was dark when I got home and it’s raining out right now so I’ll post pics later. This SUCKS!

Was it a close loved one?

Oh, wait... you mean deer! four legged critter!

That sucks! They can do an amazing amount of damage. I have had so many close calls over the years with them that I figure one day my luck is going to run out. At least you are among the lucky. I have seen instances where the critter came over the hood and through the windshield.... not pretty!

cut him some slack, he's from WEST virginia. :joking:
Sucks man. Luckily I have never even had a close call living out here in CO but ever time I am driving through areas where they are I am always worried one will jump out in front of me.
Dang, I am sorry to hear that! At least you are ok and your truck can be fixed.
Sorry to hear about that. Glad your ok. I'm guessing the damages may be much more then you think cost wise. It doesn't take long for expenses to add up, even with what appears to be minor damages. But at least it can be fixed

OOPS a typo and the WV jokes start! Yea, it was a loved one. I would have loved to cook it up for dinner. Some good ole' West Virginia road kill!
I hate driving the road I was on because of the deer population there. But sometimes you just don't have a choice. I always look out for them on that road but you can only do so much with them. There were about a half dozen or so running along the edge of the road and as I was slowing down the one dumb a$$ decided to dart in front of me. But the good thing is that I am fine and it could have been a LOT worse. I'm just waiting for the insurance adjuster to look at it now. What do you all think the cost of the damages is going to be (see pics below)?

I kept some of his hair

And I scared the s**t out of him

That actually doesn't look as bad as I've seen. Deer in NY are ridiculous where I'm from, I've hit two in a previous truck. I've been very lucky since getting my tacoma. I'm not really sure that is deer sh!it though, deer have crap like rabbits, it comes out it pellets, but you slammed into it, so I guess anything could happen.

If the damage is confined to just the headlight, and front fender, you might get away ok, but if it's elsewhere, you might be right assuming the high expense. Good luck with everything!
The damage doesn't look to extreme.

The deer was hurt worse than it appeared. As a hunter I have seen several deer that have been fatally wounded empty their bowels as they run off, it is a reaction to their body shutting down. The deer probably ran off into the trees, bedded down, and died.
Glad you are ok. Truck doesn't look too bad, but probably still enough to need the insurance.

Hey at least you have a story that few now have. "A damn deer shit on my truck."

Oh, and yeah, that deer is probably dead. Little guys will run for hundreds of yards even after a seemingly fatal hit/shot. Really quite annoying!
Yea, I have seen MUCH worse. So I could say I am lucky. But if I was lucky, it wouldn’t of happened at all.
I figured that it might have been wounded worse than it appeared but I’ll never know. All I remember is that after I stopped I seen it get up and take off running. But I agree it might be laying in the middle of the field or woods now.
it doesn't look as bad as i expected. hopefully they can get it fixed for not too much.

i know exactly how you feel man. in 3 days it will be the one year anniversary of me hitting a deer with my truck. my damage was 10x worse than yours though. when all was said and done, the insurance adjuster quoted me $8700. when the truck was finished, the price only came to $7600, but still... that's a shitload of money for just hitting a deer.

here's what happen to mine....

and here's the deer....

I never looked at it that way. But I would have been fine without that story!
Yea, yours is more of what I am use to seeing in a deer vs vehicle accident. Those repair cost do add up quick!
Find the deer, cut it up and eat it.

I thought he meant he hit a little old lady. :preach:
Finally got an estimate. Damages came in at $2393.30. My insurance is mailing me a check minus my deductable wtih my name and toyota financial on it since it is financed through them. Now I have to get them to sign the check. Has anyone ever had to do this? How hard was it to get them to sign it? I'm guessing I'll have to mail it to them for them to sign it. Or would I be lucky and be able to take it to a dealership?

I have been told that since it was a deer accident that most of the time you don't have to pay the deductble. For those of you that have hit anykind of wildlife, what did you have to do?

They are giving me $30 per day for a rental. What should I expect out of that? a Yaris? That will be hard to haul my MTB with :headbang:
You shouldn't have to get toyota to sign it...the body shop should take it with just your sig on it...at least that is what I would think...I would probably call your insurance agent and find out tho first.

As far as a rental goes, you can ask for a truck, but the $30 a day from the insurance may not quite cover a truck.
