New to forum and just purchased a 2020 Corolla XSE. Looking to replace the factory mirror with a Toyota accessory Homelink frameless mirror, part number PT374-00210. It's a lithium battery operated with no wires. Seems easy enough. Only problem is removing the plastic housing around the mirror. I don't want to break the plastic. There is not a YouTube video for this. Any recommendations for removing the plastic shroud without breaking it?

Put you hands on the plastic surround on both sides of the mirror and just slide it down the windshield. It takes a little effort but it's just that simple. Re-installation is the opposite.

The lithium battery is non-replaceable and the manufacturer states the battery will last 10 years. I believe the battery is only being used when you hold down the buttons to open the garage door.

But unlike the wired one, someone could access the car parked outside and open a garage door without the ignition on right?

The Homelink will always work and be on. I also have a 2015 Highlander with the factory Homelink installed and it also opens the garage without the ignition being on. So in theory, you can access the aftermarket Homelink powered by a lithium battery or factory Homelink wired to the vehicles electrical system while parked outside without the ignition on.

Unfortunately, this is how the circuit was designed without security in mind. But, you can always delete it from the mirror and not use it.

I have an older gentex home link and compass mirror. The home link works, but it's very inconsistent. Its been deleted out of memory.

Honestly though, if a thief wants to gain access to a garage, they'd make too much noise unless there's a side door access.

Use it or don't. It's up to you.

But how is this any different from having a battery powered remote from the opener manufacturer in the car?
It's out of convenience? One less item to carry around. Never knew there's a backup battery.

My cars never had this option. Installed the gentex mirror with compass and home link. It's cool that it has 3 memory slots. Less remotes if you own an entry gate in addition to and overhead door.

Oh, convenience makes sense. My reply was mostly focusing on the comment about security. I can't think of anyone I know that doesn't leave their opener remote clipped to the sun visor or sitting in an easily accessible/open place in the car. :)

Security is non existent with the home link. Unless it's wired into a hard switch that can't be turned on with no power. Sounds less probable.

The remotes in both my Tundra and Corolla are hidden from sight. My wife’s RAV4 has the Homelink buttons programmed.

I thought the Homelink in the mirror that’s wired up required ignition power to work?
The circuit is ground, battery, and ignition 12v. My mirror is wired this way.
