My old Highlander had Homelink controls on the driver side visor. I could only get it to work for a little while, but I liked how it blended with the interior. The visors in my 08' are very think and my garage door opener does not clip to it so it just sits in my cupholder. I would like to get a console from a Limited, but I don't know if it involves special wiring or not?

I bought and installed a compass mirror with homelink built-in. Pretty happy.
NOTE: Really, homelink works best with attached garages. If you have a detached garage, you have to either use the side door of garage to enter then open garage door from inside vehicle or take the remote inside house with you.

BTW, I put the garage door on the pouch on the side of the console (clip on outside so unit is largely out of view & can't accidentally bump it with leg).

If you have decent mechanical abilities, search ebay for a home link visor - the homelink module is universal and you can buy visors with them really cheap, just get one with the homelink module in the color you want - usually most are grey, black or tan. You can then just remove the module off the old visor and attach it to your exisiting visor and run the wires (just needs power) or attach it to the console - all for about 30 bucks.

+1 on the Gentex 50-GENK45A. I have one on my Vette and my wife's Honda. Great piece of equipment. Shop around carefully for it online and you should be able find it for significantly less than what the averge vendors charge. There is an older model and newer model. Make sure you get the newer one.

Any picture?

Hi,
Do you have any picture of the installation or just the finished installation?
Does the base visor have power wire inside?
I have done one in my Corvette ...
Thanks,
-Mike

Homelink doesn't work

Ok, I know this has been on the forum before, but I tried everything...
Seriously, I've tried everything on the forum...

I have a '08 Highlander Hybrid Limited.
The garage opener cannot receive the signal of from my car. I've tried another car and it has no problem. I even tried my friend's garage...

I want to know if anyone else had a problem like this. If so, please let me know how you fixed it...

I had it in my old hl and I got it to program once then I added the keypad outside and I had to reprogram the transmitters and it would never work again! I have a chamberlain rolling code door opener so I'm sure that complicated it! Good luck!!!

I would start out by clearing the codes in the HomeLink memory (see step 1)

Then follow the step 2 and step 3 instructions.

If you can program and open your neighbors door it would tell you that the HL's Homelink system works. If not you may have a problem with the Homelink system in the HL and need to have a dealer check it out.

If your garage door opener is old you may have a compatability problem between the systems. You can buy a new receiver that Sears and other places that can be wired to your existing door opener and then program the new remote into the HL Homelink system.

Good Luck and let us know how it goes.

Step 1 Clearing all settings if you sell the car or have problems programming a remote)

Clear the Homelink system by holding the outside (left most and right most) buttons down for 2 to 20 seconds until you see the indicator light flash

Step 2 Program a remote opener into the Homelink system

Point the remote control for the device 1 to 3 in. (25 to 75 mm) from the HomeLink control buttons (Keep the indicator light on the HomeLink in view while programming).

Press and hold down one of the buttons on the HomeLink and the button on the transmitter. When the indicator light on the HomeLink changes from a slow to a rapid flash after 20 seconds,
you can release both buttons.

Step 3 Programming the Homelink button into the garage door opener

Programming a Rolling Code system (for U.S.A. owners)
If your device is Rolling Code equipped, follow the steps under the the steps listed below.

Locate the training button on the ceiling mounted garage door opener motor. The exact location and color of the button may vary by brand of garage door opener.
Refer to the operation manual supplied with the garage door opener for the location of the training button.
Press the training button (it should start to flash and you have 30seconds to do the next step)

Press and release the Homelink button you programmed in step 2 TWICE.
The garage door may open.

If the garage door opens, the programming process is complete.

IF THE DOOR DOES NOT OPEN, PRESS AND RELEASE THE BUTTON A THIRD TIME.

This third press and release will complete the programming process by opening the garage door.
The ceiling mounted garage door opener motor should now recognize the HomeLink transceiver and operate the garage door.

I had a hard time getting mine programmed, turns out I have a rolling code opener. Took 5-10 attempts and re-reading the instructions 1000000000 times in order to get it working
