I checked Edmunds true market value for a 2017 Limited Highlander with 29,000 miles for $29,900. Is that what I should be aiming for as an offer? Mainly the dealers have this model around 31k or 32k but I did find one dealership in particular who is always offering exactly what Edmunds indicates as the true market value. Should I offer $500 lower? Or should I be going thousands lower?

FWIW, I noticed car-gurus say $29,700. Pretty close! You can always go up in your offer but you can't go down. Helps too if you have your finances in place and don't rely on them.

You can buy a brand new 2019 for around $32, I just did. Check out your financing options and take a look. Your insurance company might have a deal with trucar which will give you good insight into what new and used cars see for. AAA also has a buying service that will get you a fair price. Dealers buy and sell cars for a living, they have a lot of experience that tilts the deal their way.

You're doing the right thing. Research. Don't just use one source. Get multiple.

KBB,COM, NADAguides.com, truecar.com..and several more.

Then take the average. Use that number as a starting point and then go DOWN. With this Covid 19 - car sales are way way down.

Used car prices are plummeting due to, among other things, unneeded rental and other fleet vehicles piling up as business and leisure travel grinds to a halt with a slow recovery anticipated. I wouldn’t be offering anywhere near the current listed value for any used vehicle. Not when there are rental lots with vehicles parked bumper to bumper. I would even consider renting by the week if I needed a vehicle now and buying in a month or two.
