So I ordered these (90915-YZZN1, Qty 3, Toyota Oil FIlters | eBay) Toyota oil filters of an eBay seller and one from the dealership yesterday. I wanted to compare them to see if the eBay ones were fake. I inspected closely and they look basically identical, both the filter and the packaging. However one came with the drain plug gasket and the other did not. And also the number indented into the filter on the bottom were different, the eBay has "2" and the dealer one has "4". Attatched I have pics. Do you think the eBay one is a genuine Toyota product or not?

4 OEM looks cleaner on the cutouts. I would just buy filters from the dealer online. They arnt expensive. Order on the dealer site and have it as a local pickup option. When it’s ready, pick it up.

When I worked at the dealer the parts counter guys would put the drain plug gasket in the filter box at the counter, they didn't come from Toyota with it in the box... Separate part number.

I wouldn't worry about that stamp being different, probably just came off a different machine and they identify the machine for troubleshooting purposes.

I find it strange that some filter kits come with the gasket. As a walk-in customer, I’ve been consistently charged retail price except for some occasions. Now I also include the gasket in my cart for online order pickup. Maybe the retail priced filters has some chance of getting that gasket? Unsure.

I bought some filters in person as well. None of the filters I bought came with a free gasket. Not once.

The best gift I got from a dealer was a used body panel screw from a Honda dealer. I was excited about it tho. Got what I needed to be done.

I need to know where you find these gasket givers lol. I’m still paying that dollar per gasket here.

Depending on the counter person, you might get a free gasket or get charged for one. At least that's happened to me.

Both of those filters look genuine to me. The stamping numbers, as others said, are just different machine id numbers. As long as the eBay seller is a genuine dealer, which some are, then you're fine.

The Toyotaparts4U seller claims to be a dealer in Florida. If they included paper invoice with address and phone number that would be easier to verify. I didn't see anything on eBay to use.

Or you can order directly on the dealer's website, but shipping charges will differ but usually more advantageous if you order more. That why I said order in bulk. You can order other maintenance items like air filters, wiper blades, etc.

You take with a grain of salt.

Also look at the car care nut channel on YouTube. There’s a video on fake versus genuine parts.

Go to the Car Care Nut's YouTube channel, he has a video on how to spot fake OEM parts.

My only thought is, as with damn near everything on FleaBay it’s a crap shoot. Sometimes you win sometimes you don’t. Best bet if you want OEM is online Toyota dealers, typically almost as low as eBay and none of the worries. The not worrying part is worth at least the maybe extra $1 to me.

The OEM filters do not come with drain plug gaskets, but some dealers and sellers will add them. The way I make sure mine is genuine is to only buy the filters from dealers. There are a few of them who sell 10-packs on Ebay and they are a good value.

There are all sorts of ways for sellers to purchase OEM products and still sell them. Yes, one must be careful. They appear to be OEM, even on eBay. I have a cousin that sells a tremendous amount of merchandise on eBay and they are not knock offs, so I would guess you are fine. Interestingly enough, I have been eyeing down the same filters for a 4 Runner (Dad's) not due for one year, but you have to purchase in quantity to get a good deal, and with only annual oil changes, it may not be worth it. I may switch over to a higher-end Fram, Wix, Mobil 1, etc.

If you want guaranteed OEM DO NOT BUY ON EBAY OR AMAZON! The chinese have perfected the art of counterfeiting.

The sad part is the Chinese have perfected replicas of everything. The real question now becomes, where are the OEM products made? And how do we really know if the Chinese were involved?

I would never buy anything that critical on eBay. Either buy from your dealer or, go to an auto parts store and buy a high quality compatible one there. You don’t need an Oem filter as long as it is high quality. Do research on the Internet. Plenty of good info available.

There are so many controversial videos on the market and information, and there is one that is always criticizing one brand or another. If anyone has suggestions on what they like (top 5 filters) and what they dislike (top-bottom filter), this would be great. The problem is counterfeit products from E-Bay and Amazon. I personally have used the FRAM 20,000 oil filter, along with Mobil 1, and Wix, plus of course OEM, but the OEM that I used and stocked up on and ran out where from a dealer in MA where I purchased 6 of them. Now that I am out, what do we use?

Toyota doesn't manufacture any of the "disposable" parts,or most of the bolt on parts, like water pumps,carburetors/throttle bodies and most of the cars are supplied by parts companies. Any quality filter would work just as well as OEM.

You already have them, so go on and use them. Change your oil as often as you feel necessary.
