I was told to remove the boots and then the four bolts and then the shifter would come out but I can't get it out. It will slide back about an inch and I can tell that there is a shaft coming out in front and it looks like that shaft has to slide all the way out. Do I need to just tap the shifter back until the shaft comes out or am I missing something?
Thanks

those 4 bolts to take the shifter assembly out are a pita to get at. If you managed to take those off, you should easily be able to pull the shifter assembly out.

If your trying to replace the cup and seat bushings, its not necessary to take the whole shifter assembly out or the 4 bolts.
