That one looks like an early W55 as it has the aluminum bulkhead (later replaced by cast iron) between the case and tail shaft housing. IIRC, a W56 looks the same but has a different gear ratio. Other than shifting it into gear and counting output revolutions vs. single input shaft rotation I don't know how you would tell them apart.

If you want to use a 90's W5x in an 84-88 you will have to swap over the shift pawl, gasket and shift cover plate as the location for the shifter is incorrect (too far forward) on the later models. I just did that with a 94 about a year ago. Pretty simple.
